Default HH VHF Standard vs. ICOM

Getting ready to buy a handheld VHF radio. Have narrowed my search to either a Standard Horizon 260S or an ICOM M-2A. Anyone familiar with either of these- I would appreciate your opinion.

I would probably take the Standard given that choice. Its not that I think its a better radio. I don't think there's really any difference between them in terms of quality. I just like the face layout and feel of the thing better for the Standard. Also, doesn't the 260 also come with a battery tray for AA Alkalines to store away as an emergency spare? If they do that is a very nice thing to have.

Not the same models but...

The staff at our club use the Standard HX-350 and ABUSE the heck out of them. The radios stand up remarkably well. I have a HX-460 which I've used for 3 years now and it's always getting shoved in a bag, bouncing around on the console, getting dropped and, except for a few scratches, it's going strong.

I'm a big believer in the quality of the standard hand helds.

Both companies are #1 & #2 as far as quality of radios with everyone else a distant 3rd. I would give the edge to ICOM, but both are produce quality radios. I purchased a Icom M1V last year. It has excellent quality, good size, submirsible and phenominal battery life. Look for size, features important to you (submirseble was one of the features that was important to me) and battery life.

Thanks for all the feedback. I just finished reading some reviews on the West Marine site- several people complained about the Standard not being waterproof at all. Yet others said that they intentionally submersed theirs and they worked fine. Anyone had any problems with their radio after it got wet? There is about a 40.00 difference in price, so I really don't care which one I buy.

I purchased an Icom M1V from http://www.threeriversmarine.com/ this summer.

Great price, great radio, LONG last lithium battery. Check it out.
