Default Garmin 545 vs 546

I am about to pull the trigger on a chartplotter and have narrowed it down to the garmin 545/546.

My understanding is that the 546 will refresh/redraw faster than the 545. Does anyone know if this is true and if it is significantly faster? I can live with the lack of xmweather and nmea 2000 in the 545, but if the redraw is much better on the 546 then I would spend the extra $. Many thanks!

I am not familiar with the 545/546.

however I can comment on the faster redraw. buy the fastest you can afford. the moment you have to wait for that redraw. you will be kicking yourself for not buying the faster model.

I upgraded from c series to twin e series and the redraw was a big improvement. if I had to do it again. I would of paid the extra coin up front to get the e series.

live and learn. no one ever complain about being too fast.

only time to ever settle for the slower model is becuase of financial constrant and that was all you could afford.

Thanks for response UaVaj. I agree that redraw time is very important. I am leaning towards the 546 but the cheapskate in me is forcing me to do my homework.

If anyone has seen these two units side by side in action I would appreciate an opinion.

go with the faster one you will not reget it! My older(2003) raymarine tracks soooo slow if you put it on track mode and follow my trip line you would laugh zig zags. Started to use compass then got my new Garmin almost instant tracking way way better

I just bought a 545 instead of a 546 because the XM antenna for it is less than half the price of the new one.

Garmins have fast redraw anyway, so you will probably be happy with the 545; its four times faster than a C series Raymarine. If you don't anticipate going to N2K in the next couple years, you should put the money in the bank and wait for what comes next when you are ready.

I've been using a Garmin 545 since last spring. Never noticed any problem with redraw. It's very quick. Very, very satisfied with the 545.

I'm looking at the 546s and thought I'd check the 545s on places like ebay hoping to find a deal. BOE has the 546s for $731, and the best I could find the 545s online was $699 (I think I was comparing apples to apples). Unless you've found something else I'd pay that few extra bucks for the newer unit.

Hmm, I guess I was confused. I thought the 545 was not xm weather compatible, but after seeing your post I found that on the garmin site it is listed as xm compatible. Not sure what I was thinking. Maybe I saw specs for the 525 or something.

Garmin web site shows 546 has higher GPS sensitivity, NMEA 2000 capable, more memory for waypoints tracks and logs. Lacks older CANet connection. See this link for comparison:
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/compare....reProduct=8109

I am upgrading my chartplotter and have a 546s for sale if you are interested. Bought new in January and used for three months.
