Default Furuno 585 vs Garmin gds22

Guy's, with the lastest update from Garmin, is the 585 $800.00 better then the gds22? Fishing will be inland to the canyons, ducer will be a SS264 200Hz wide for now, may add the 50Hz later. Simple question, is the Furuno that much better?

I run a 585 with a TM 260 1KW for deep water & a 600W for cruising. It works. It shows structure & fish. It is reliable after two years use. I am very happy with it.
Is it better than a GDS?? Cannot help you with a comparison but most of the charter guys & pro fisherman I know down this way run Furuno sounders.

I opted for the stand alone 585 in my set up. I will give you feedback when I actually get to use it.

I have to say that the 5.7 software update made considerable improvement to the GDS22 performance. Up until then I was regretting not including a 585 when I did the electronics on the new boat. I can now say I no longer miss it and glad I have the two 4212 units. I am speaking from experience as I had a 4212/585 combination on the previous boat. I will not go so far as to say the two are equal but Garmin has certainly closed the gap significantly.

Garmin sonar not only with the latest sfotware but also with the feature software, can-not come close to Furuno sonar.

Thanks for the replys, Gcsart thats an answer I was looking for. I know the gds22 ain't no 585, but the cost difference is bugging me. I had planned on
the 4210/585 combo, then the updates came out, the gds22 is look'in good, cheaper, more room in the electronics box. But, the 585 is just plain sweet, no split screen, I got the room, and hell, it's only money. Ya all know I want the 585, I'm just looking to be convinced I need it.

I have the 585 nestled to the starboard side of my navnet vx2 10.4, you will love it. The gds 22 is nice but not half as good as the fvc 585. I'm like you, I want my navigation screen and my sonar to be separate screens, no split screen!

Funny the difference a few days make. The thread below was comparing the GSD22 tothe 582L and the consensus was the 600 watt Furuno was better.

You do realize 200kHz, especialy a wide, won't let you see the bottom in the NE canyons.

If the choice is a Garmin 4212 + 585 or 4212 w/GSD22, the 585 package wins for two reasons - it is a better fishfinder and it is on a second screen.
Now if the choice is 4212 + 585 or 4212 + 4212 w/GSD22, I will take the twin 4212 screens and the flexibility it gives every day of the week over the little bit of performance gain a 585 has over the GSD22.

HH, that thread was the thing that got me started. I had my mind made up on the 22, and their going on that the old 582 is better then the 22, Birdy wasn't even pushing it.

BP, "The gds 22 is nice but not half as good as the fvc 585."
LI32, "the little bit of performance gain a 585 has over the GSD22."
These statements have been kill'in me, see it on THT and other forums.
So I guess the answer is, there is no answer.

LI32, I know that 200Hz won't go deep, next year I'll go for the 50Hz, little hard to
eat two of those ducers and finish the electronics all at once.
After reading your post I realized I total screwed up. I have a CC with a marlin tower
upper station. I haven't even thought of electronics up top. The 22 is the only answer,
4xxx up top and I'll have everything at both stations. Stuff another 4xxx next to the 4210 I have already and no split screen. Ok, I went from crying about $800.00 to needing $3000.00 in plotters, but at least I have a plan now, GSD22 it is!

Thanks Guy's
Bruce
