Default Garmin 2006 vs Lowrance LCX 15MT

Got a new baot headed this way and need a GPS/FF.

It is going to be a bay boat with no top, so I am leaning towards the mono screen
for that reason.

So I am down to either the Lowrance LCX 15MT, or the Garmin 2006 with the black box.

I have no experience with the Garmin bottom machines and have heard mixed reviews.
I have been on plenty of boats with lowrance equipment. And after the initial failures
everyone seams to be pretty happy with their performance. I have also heard that the
new navionics gold card is right up there with the garmin blue chart.

Since this is a bay boat my primary purpose is:
1 chartography
2 reading bottom in fairly shallow water (less than 3')
3 finding bait and releif of structure.

I never fish greater than 150' so it will also only be used in the 200 kHz mode.

So this is what I am up against and need for my next unit.

I would love to go seperates but I only have 11" to play with on the top on the console.

So any suggestions.

Thanks for the advise in advance.

After reading some of the stuff on THT about Lowrance lately. I would not have one on my boat. For GPS, Garmin is pretty tough to beat anyway.

Garmin customer service is the best - they are knowlegeable on installs and when I had a problem with my screen flaking on my 2010 -they replaced it immediatley via fed-ex both ways prepaid and transferred all my waypooints to boot.

I have the Lowrance 15MT and love it. No problems (other than what I caused) and the customer support I have received has been great. One thing that confuses me about your initial inquiry was the part about "reading bottom in fairly shallow water (less than 3')". Unless I'm missing something here, I would just look over the side.......Any fish that MAY have been there are long gone.....

I had a LCX-16CI and used it as a fishfinder, alongside a 2006C chartplotter. I've still got the Garmin, the display on the Lowrance flaked out in its second season. It was over 1 year old, so no warranty. Fishfinder for me is now a Furuno.

I've got the bigger 2010C w/GSD20 sounder module and have been pretty pleased with it. Works fine in shallow water for me with transom mount xducer. The charting and options for nav are exceptional.

Had a lot of problems with this Lowrance model that the factory couldn't fix after 2 mailings. Replaced it wit a cheapy Garmin, and I am very happy. The lowrance is almost impossible to see in the daytime, so unless you just fish at night.......

Bullshipper: Did you have the LCX 15MT I assume you said this unit refering to this model Lowrance.

Bailey: Yes at 3' I'm certainly not looking for fish, but I would like to keep my lower unit.

Are the screen issues on the garmin on both the color and mono screens? Doing a little more
looking around it seams as though there are more problems with the color, but that may be just
because there are more color units out ther also.

Since it is going to be on a completly open boat this is a prety big concern of mine. Even though the
boat will be stored indoors, I always like to minimize the potential problems.

I've got the 2006C and have gone through the screen spotting problems with it. I finally found a screen cleaner designed for laptops that got rid of the spots.

Colliwh

I notice in your signature you also have a Furuno 600.

Is there any comparison between the GSD 20 and the Furuno?

i have the lcx 15 and a 3000 mt as gps i love both units and would buy again my buddy has the 2010 garmin and it is a great unit if i was spending 2400.00$ i think i would buy the garmin but otherwise the set up i have now is great the lcx15 mt backs up as a gps if ever i needed a back up, my units are 4 and 5 years old and have never had any problems until this past month when the finder depth has gone alittle screwy for short periods but otherwise no problems. i guess the real test of what i buy next will be the way the repair is handled when the boat comes out of the water for the season. time will tell.
