Default Magellan Blue Nav Software

So now I'm looking at the Magellan Meridian units.

The Meridian Mariner and the Color unit seem to come with a "built-in mapping database of North American, including interstates, highways, city locations, airports, waterways, rivers, lakes, fixed nautical markers, buoys, lighthouses, and more."

I'm going to be boating around LI Sound, I'll have a depth finder. Will the loaded software be enough to get me around the coast line or do I really need the Blue Nav software?

Also is the Color unit worth the extra money?

I'm going with the Magellan because of the trade-in program so don't tell me how great the Garmins are, I have 2 already.

Thanks, Rob

what a coincidence, as i have 2 garmins too, and one magellan!

yes, get color. no, the standard (built-in) marine maps are NOT adequate. and no, even the blue nav won't be nearly as good as garmin's bluecharts.

but, i do prefer magellan LAND maps over garmin's.

The color Meridians do not have enough memory to display the Blue Nav's contour lines. I don't know about the other Meridians. I suggest you call Magellan before you buy and be disappointed.

You cannot see the Meridian's color display in the daylight - don't get one!

Otherwise the Meridians are great units.

None of the handheld displays (Garmin, Magellan, etc) are big enough to utilize the chart displays, they get too busy and cluttered as you zoom in.

Thanks for the head's up John.

Any input on the FX324 Color? I wasn't considering it until I saw that it's only about 9"x6" and there is room for it on my dash. It'd be out in the open so I wouldn't need the external antenna. Is the screen big enough for the Blue Nav and is the color usable in the day?

Thanks, Rob

Rob,

I do not have any experience with the FX324 Color - sorry.
