Default Old GPS question(Magelan 5000), should I just get a new one?

About 8 years ago I won a Magellan 5000 DLX handheld. Never had cause to use it much but now I'm setting up a small open boat and am condsidering using it, it's small enough to fit my limited dsah space. and I'm in coastal waters, LI Sound

First, did the older units become more accurate when the GPS induced error was turned off by the DOD a few years back or is it just newer units that are accurate?

Secondly, am I wasting my time with this unit, are they still up to the task of getting me home, marking some good fishng spots, etc? Or should I bite the bullet and buy new?

Thanks, Rob

I think that gps will get you home but won't put you right on your fishing spots. Try a new one with the WASS and you will be able to return to the exact spot time after time. My old one would get me 50-75 yards. The new one gets me about 8-10 feet.

I have the Magellan 6000, handheld that I use as a backup. Take a look at the Garmin units www.garmin.com with WAAS. I have the Garmin 76S handheld. The unit you have is not waterproof either. Keep it as a backup.

Rob,
Magellen has a trade in program, that gives you abot 40% off on a new unit if you ship them your old one, working or not. You call them in San Dimas Ca. for the details.
I had a cheapy $100 Magellen that finally died and I mailed to the factory, who sent me this $400 unit for $260. It is a hand held Magellen Marine Platnimum with a console mounting braket, and it makes my stationary Garmin 152 look bad in comparision.
So even if it dies on you, you can use it to get another cheap. The Platnum model model rocks.

Both previous replys give a good answer. I have an old Magellan handheld, still works great, but without WAAS will not put you on the spots. However, it's still good to get you home.

I use my old Magellan as a backup too.
