Default GPS Maps Highest Detail???

Will be buying a GPS chartplotter for my 18ftCC . Who has the highest quailty (most detail) maps out their??? I have about $1300 to spend on the unit itself, and I want to get the best I can afford. The dealer is trying to talk me into a combo unit (GPS fishfinder). I still like the idea of seperate boxes just in case one craps out.

Thanks

I know there are a lot of folks out there that love their Garmins but I have to say that I really like the Navman 5500m with the 5" screen, that I just put on my boat. And it's got the fuel computer!!

Given you budget (but not knowing your console size) you could get their larger unit, the 5600 which has a 6" (+) screen. I picked up the 5500, with the fuel sender and a C-MAP NT+ Superwide map cartridge for a little over 800. That would leave you plenty for a nice Fishfinder.

The screen is fantastic, it's got four different display 'modes' including daylight, night, paper and 'normal' - whatever normal is... I find that I can see it very well both sitting and standing at the helm and in all kinds of light conditions. A buddy who has a B/W Garmin is considering moving to the color Navman based on features / price.

The C-MAP chart is VERY detailed, even shows the small underwater rock near where I moor my boat and the flagpole at the club.

Food for thought.

I was looking at the NAVMAN TRACKER 5600 GPS/CHARTPLOTTER, ($999.95) its got a 6.4 wide display. Seems very nice. But I would need the Superwide + chart for where I plane to fish. $299.00 for the chart though. The Navionics are a $100.00 less. Garmin CD's and any downloadable stuff is out of the question. I only have MACs at home and at work. And none of those programs work on macs

garmin 188c. their blue chart maps are tops, far and away. the unit itself is top quality for the $$$, in recreational category. the FF/sounder function is more than adequate.

The $999 is way too high! I did a quick look at http://www.byownerelectronics.com and they've got it for under $900 and I know brokenlegdave would have it cheaper as well. Same thing on the map cartridge. Both vendors seem to be well thought of here. I've used Dave and I believe byownerelectronics is a THT vendor - you may even be able to get a member discount.

So, join the Captain's Club, support THT AND save money! How cool is that!

Garmin gets my vote also. The 188c is very nice, the 2006C has a much better screen and has come down in price quite a bit since it's not the newest thing out there anymore. You can get the 2006c for 1300 at some of the online discounters, such as www.brokenlegdave.com . Garmin sells both the CD version of bluecharts as well as preprogrammed chips that don't require a PC to use. A fishfinder function can be added to the 2006c for $223 plus the cost of a transducer. My opinion is that the Bluecharts are a huge improvement in ease of use over CMap. The only way to know for sure is get a chip of your area put into a demo model at the store and try both systems out.

Look at the Bluechart on a Garmin 2006C before you buy anything. I love mine.

The "best detail" in a chart right now, regardless of what hardware you get, is C-map NT+.

I admit I haven't seen that many CMap NT+ installs, but for the few I've seen for my area, Bluecharts blow them away.

I have both. C-map's detail on the + chips probably carries 25% more detail. I like Garmins interfaces better, which make Bluecharts generally easier to use, but not as much detail.

Garmin Bluecharts are Navionics software in a Garmin proprietary format from what I have read. I have C-Map NT+ and they are the way to go IMHO.
