I've heard some good comments about the Uniden, but most people have a definite preference for Standard Horizon or ICOM, when it comes to handhelds. I'm an ICOM fan.

There is a big difference between water resistant, waterproof and submersible. If this is your only radio or you are planning on using it for emergency backup, then you want submersible.....and only submersible. The uniden is waterproof. The other important consideration is the radios ability to use normal alkaline batteries which the Uniden does have...some don't. The thought here is that the one time you really need that radio will be the time you forgot to recharge the battery....

In a recent test (someone else will have to tell you where it is) the top performer in real life conditions was the standard HX260S. It costs a little more and probably has fewer features (that you won't use anyway), but what's your life worth?
