Default Navman FF

Anyone out here have any experience with the Navman fishfinders? The color 4500 in particular.

I recently put a Navman Tracker 5500 GPS on my boat and, after some initial trouble with a bad head unit which Navman propmtly replaced, I'm loving it. Great screen, I like the controls and much more bang for the buck (IMHO) than many of the others. I seriously considered the Garmin's but really wanted the fuel management of the Navman.

So, thoughts? I'm not a real big fisherman so I don't need every bell and whistle. If I get the Navman I'll probably switch the fuel tracking from the GPS to the FF since I'm more likely to have the FF on whenever I have the engine running - and that's kind of important if your watching your fuel! :-)

Should mention - I boat/fish in Long Island Sound and the best price I've seen so far for the Navman was in the $500's - so that's my usage area and top end budget wise.

No one out there with an opinion on this one? That doesn't seem possible!

Any recommendations for a small (5 inch screen) color fishfinder in the $500 range are greatly appreciated!

Thx all.

Doug I asked the same thing on here a few months back that you did and got about as many responses. I had the opportunity to see a 4500 in action a few months ago and really liked it but I have never owned a color FF so I may have been "overly impressed" compared to other color units. I was with some Navman factory guys and they said that the Brunswick Corporation had purchased Navman. This FF was in New Zealand for 16 years before it was purchased by Brunswick according to the factory reps. Navman is also under the same corporate umbrella as Northstar. The unit looked great in the bright sunlight and showed the things I was interested in seeing since I fish shallow fresh water lakes. I understand it also has a three year warranty. They also said their warranty policy was to send you a new unit rather than repair your faulty one. Don't know any more than that.

The guy who heads up smartcraft for mercury also tells me that that Navman will interface more and more with smartcraft as new Navman products come out. Merc and Navman owned by Brunswick...

I have the NAVMAN FF but not the color unit. I like the features, but the detail doesn't compare with my Garmin. However, if you don't fish much that probably would not matter. What I really like about the unit, is that you can switch to a "navigate" mode. In that mode the depth appears in HUGE letters on the screen. So if you are in skinny water, the depth is easily read.

I use the navman ff, I am not sure of the model, but is monochrome. I also have the fuel module. As far as a fish finder, I can not tell you much, I use it for the fuel and the depth. I bought it just for those 2 reasons. When I am running, it works fine. I can keep depth, and do see fish show up on it. The only problem that I have had, is I keep hitting the transducer on it, and it flips up, then I lose depth until I put it back in position. I have also lot speed entirerly. I think the transducer needs to be replaced. I will do that at the end of the seasons. I have the Navman monochrome chart plotter so speed is there. If I had to do it again, I would go with the Navman units, but stick with color on the chart plotter.

NPH, I leave my boat in the water and have some problems with the paddle wheel and speed as well. Regarding the tansducer bumping up...did you tighten the bolt/nut on the mounting unit? I didn't do that at first but after I tightened that down, I did not have any problems with it moving.
