Default Digital 529VW Antenna

Just got my antenna and it doesn't look like the picture. It is pretty dinky at the top, about the size of a pencil dia. maybe smaller, no protective cap on this end either. Did I recieve the right antenna??? It's built like a cheaper model. Picture shows the 529VW to be rather large at the top, like my Shakspeare 5225XT ,also with protective cap.

I also asked for a custom ordered antenna with only 10' of cable and I recieved one with 20'.

I will be calling the folks I ordered from and ask for a return authorization lable and request that I recieve what I ordered.

Just wanted to air a little and see what a 529 VW is suppose to look like from those of you that have them.

Thanks

I have a Digital antenna, but not sure of the model. Like you mentioned, perhaps you received the wrong one...

Concerning the cable, I think performance is best with a "standard" length, and shortening is not usually recommended.

Mine is thicker than a pencil and has the end cap. It appears you got another make or model antenna. Not sure, but I think all DIGITAL marine antennas have the end cap. I know my VHF, AM/FM and Cell antennae do!

As far as cable length, as long as there is enough cable to allow your antenna to be mounted a minimum of 3 feet form your transmitter, you are fine. It is probably even better to shorten it to reduce RF power loss. It is not like the CB radio of yesteryear where coax lenghth had a definite impact on SWR match.

That being said, with a DIGITAL cable assembly (from the factory), I would avoid any alterations since it is a real high quality connection, that is tough to duplicate. Unless DIGITAL is doing the custom cutting and attachment of the connector, you probably stand to do more harm than good by having it shortened!

Big E,

I called Digital myself and asked if I could get a shorter length of cable than the standard 20'. They said all I had to do was contact a dealer and special order it and it would not be a problem.
The 10' length will have the factory connector installed as I feel it is a better set up than the solder yourself connector that Shakespeare comes with. The only reason I asked about the shorter cable was to avoid a rats nest of extra cable in my side panel where the antenna is mounted.

As far as antother make or model, who knows?? The shipping tube it came in has a sticker stating that it is a Model 529 VW but when I removed the antenna, it was not what I was expecting. There is no other markings on the antenna other than the Digital sticker on the SS mount.

I'm calling Digital this morning and then will call the dealer I bought it from and try and get this straightened out. Just a pain in the butt to do all the follow up to make things right.

In Agreement-
Shortening the cable is a good idea especially if it is being done by someone that has 'the touch'. I should have said that if you are doing it yourself, it might be wiser to leave it alone since it is such a good connector. Not many of us, myself included, have the right tools or experience to dulpicate that one!

The DIGITAL ANtennas all have the DIGITAL logo on them, so defintely call your dealer!

Big E,

Has nothing to do with "having the touch". When you get a custom length from digital, they build the antenna for that length cable...in other words, they do the tuning of the tip AFTER the cable end has been spliced on the correct length of cable. That way they get better SWRs...you can't tune the antenna after the tip is glued on, so they need to tune it for the desired cable length when it is built.

BTW, I have a pair of 529VWs and they are thin as a pencil at the top, but have a cap on the end. They came direct from Digital...I bought from Defender, sent them to Digital, and Digital sent me back two new antennas with the correct length cables. All 4 antennas had the same shape and tip.

Recieved the custom antenna from Digital yesterday. Tip was on and the cable was as requested 10'.
Talked with my dealer yesterday also and said it had been a oversite sending out the regular antenna. Through email, arranging for the return of the unused antenna.

Big E and Harry,,,Thanks for the insite on what the antenna looks like. Think I have the right one now.
