Default Lowrance LCX-104C vs Furuno GP 1850WF

A trip to the local boat show today, followed by a pass through West Marine hasn't made my electronics package selection very easy.

I want to give priority to a "great" fishfinder, but A 22 foot boat doesn't leave room for a full suite, so I want the GPS chart Plotter/sounder combined. Remember, we're talking a 22 foot boat, not a 38 ft. Luhrs!

So far, the contenders are as follows"

Furuno GP1850WF/NT with Chart card, transducer, etc.) $1900 7" display

Raymarine C80/DSM250/P66/GPS/Chart $2700 8" display

Garmin 3006C/sounder/transducer/bluechart $2300 7" display

Lowrance LCX-104C $2300 10"display

The new Lowrance has a 1KW sounder and 10" VGA display
The Furuno has a 600 Watt proven sounder and a 7" display
The Ray Marine has a 600 watt "new technology" sounder
The Garmin has a 500 watt sounder and great charts

My instinct is to go with the Furuno, because I cannot believe the Ray Marine "improved" sounder is worth the $800 difference in price. Can anyone on this board justify the cost difference? Has Raymarine truly "raised the bar" that high? I certainly don't think one inch of increased display justifies it.

The Lowrance, At least on paper, is also becoming a major contender. I can certainly understand paying the $400 to jump from a 600 watt, 7" display to a 1,000 watt 10" display, especially if it at least cones close to Furuno in fish finding uses!

So where does one go to find knowledgeable opinions or comparisons that are free from "marketing types?" Right here, I hope.

Your opinions really help. Fire away!

I had a furuno 600 and went with the 104 with a B256 thru hull. Aside from the fact the the lowrance can record the FF and gps data for playback at the house, it is a lot better FF than the furuno was. I have no problem seeing it with the sun pointed directly at it either.

As for price thats msrp, and you can get it a lot cheaper via yachtjim from buyowneryachts in here. He's a distributer and gives us a considerable discount on gear.

But seriously, no other FF will let you sit down at night on your pc and replay the days recordings of the FF/gps. It is invaluable for identifying new potential spots that you may pass over while trolling, or just sitting back and looking what yellowtails look like being puled up from 85' in bimini.

I use a Raymarine dx500s FF in tandum with a Lowrance 16cxi. I just installed the Raymarine 500 & think the Digital Tech does raise the bar to a new level. U can c more distinctly features on the bottom & around bait pods, the dispay is dynomite. Fish out of Beaufort, NC NE to Hatteras Inlet anywhere from inshore to past Big Rock & NE along the stream. I have a good feel for the Lowrance product having had my 16CXI for almost 3 years. U can't go wrong with the 104C it's features warrant a close look. U have a combo package that's been on the market and proven. The display is great the record features using the SSD cards is unbelievable. When I fish I record from start to finish of my day's fishing (both GPS/Sonar data). I then play it back on my computer at home to c what bottom features I missed while fishing. Found more structures, ledges, rocks that aren't charted. My Lowrance hasn't missed a beat. I 've fished both units in water depths from 5' to 950. I really like the auto tune feature of the dx500. Hope this helps ....... Cheers ..... By the way I use Navionics Charts with my 16cxi terrific graphics (mines the older version of the 19CXI)

On paper, the Lowrance has the best specs. My experience was really awful with an earlier Lowrance high end display. While it worked though, I really loved the resolution it gave me. You'll never get a concensus here on that one. Raymarine's new sounders really do an awesome job, and Furuno has been building great sounders for years. I think you'd be happy with either of those two options. Garmin fishfinder function is ok, but not really competitive with the high end stuff.

Lowrance makes some killer stuff out of the box, but do a search on Lowrance and see how many people have had reliability issues. I loved my 16CI while it worked (2 years). $1000 per year is a lot to pay for a fishfinder.

I agree with dwh. Lowrance provides terrific support, but it seems that you need their support a lot.
