Default overhead mount Garmin 172c

The Garmin website and the instruction manual say you can mount the GPS 172c overhead position. But the swivel mount bracket looks like it will only attach from the bottom, not the top. The attachment points on the sides of the display unit are not centered on the thing like my furuno sounder. I dont see how I can mount it to the ceiling of the wheelhouse. Could use some advice here. Anybody else have this issue?

If you have a flat surface on the top that is non porous, like gelcoat - you can just stick it up there with some one sided tape made by 3M called "Dual Lock" - sold at West Marine part # 125841 - it's like velcro only about 5 times as strong - believe me, once you attach it, it will take two hands to "unlock it" but it pops off any time you want. It holds my vhf unneath my dash fine over a year now and there are no holes to mar the dash...very cool stuff...

donnyb I guess I don't understand your question. It seems so simple to me. Can you install the
the unit upside down in the mounting bracket?

Some brands provide short brackets with dual mounting screw locations and some use a longer brackets and a center hinge point. Either of these allow top or bottom mounting. Many Garmin units use the short bracket and only have screw mounts at the bottom side, ie bottom mount only. The new models like the 320 have the long bracket and mid mount for either mount. Your 172 is the former, bottom mount only.

Thanks CFwegman, thats what I thought. Ticks me off that the product info was misleading.I will probably fabricate a complete square bracket and bottom mount to that.

Warthog5:Thats what I'm sayin, the side mount holes on the display are not at the centerpoint, so no I can't flip the mount upside down and attach the display. Crazy, huh?
