Default Garmin GSD22 update question / problem?

I just installed the update for my units which include the GSD22 depth module. Before the update I used to be able to get a reading without the boat in the water...sitting on the rack at the marina. Now after update I get no reading...the light on the unit is green so it is powered. Does this sound right? I havent had time to put the boat in the water and want to know if anyone can shed some light on this matter before I set out for a fishing trip??

Thanks for the help

Tom

normal.

.............remember that sound travels about 1k ft per second in air and about 5k ft per second in water. so any reading on a trailer is going to be anomalous.

I noticed the same thing with my boat. Mine sits on a trailer in the driveway. I launched the boat yesterday and had no issues with the sounder. I must say that the sounder capabilities are greatly improved with the latest update. The bottom shows up much better and overal the screen is much cleaner. I wouldn't worry about the depth not reading while out of the water.

You cannnot expect to get a depth reading if the boat is out of the water. I can't explain how you had one before, but it's not normal.

You will have to put the boat in the water to test the sounder.

I wouldn't worry about it - the new update probably filters out noise better, it is smart enough to know the return isn't strong enough to be the real bottom so it doesn't show anything.

You can try by setting the range to to a little deeper then it used to display before the update (which is going to be way different then the actual height of the transducer to the ground)

My first two boats were trailer boats and I replaced the depth sounder in one. I also have a hand held depth sounder. None of those four depth sounders gave any reading other than an error reading when out of the water.

Again, if the OP's sounder used to give a reading out of the water, that is very unusual. It is normal for it to not give a reading when out of the water.

My last sounder was a raymarine dsm with an m260 and a p79, and it would give a depth reading sitting on the blocks.

Also, when the tank got low (it leaked the first time cuz I used mineral oil and 5200) it would always read 17 -21 feet regardless of depth.

Just quirks of sound. These are really sensitive ducers.

Mine did too before the update. I can see why the OP is concerned, albeit unnecessary.

In the past (before software upgrade) I would get a depth reading on land (distance to ground) It appears I am not getting that now, and I have not splashed the boat yet.
