Default Hummingbird Maxtrix 97 GPS/Fishfinder

I'm new to boating, and will be buying a 18ft CC Sea Pro. The dealer is pushing me to get a Matrix 97 GPS/Fishfinder combo. I will be sticking to the bays of NJ and NC maybe venturing out the the sea on a calm day. I like the size of the color screen for the $$$. I'm just somewhat afraid of haveing a 2 units in 1 setup. Am I better off with a seperator GPS / Fishfinder? I know the both Hummingbird and Garmin have been around for ever. Any other units I should be looking at?

Thanks

Default RE: Hummingbird Maxtrix 97 GPS/Fishfinder

I like hummingbird, have used several of them with good luck in water up to 400' deep, although everyone else on the forum will knock them pretty hard.
I recently considered a Matrix 27 monochrome, then went with a Garmin 240 Blue for its longer track record and cheaper price, and it is a good small deep water unit for the money.
So I would suggest you go to West Marine and look at the Furuno's in monchrome and color, then Garmin if you want to economize with the 250C or 320C for starters, which I feel are better units and value when compared to the Matrix97, that I heard was being discontinued. Bewae of salesmen son, get your advice here.
