Default Clarion, Poly, or something else?

Need to pick stereo gear for the boat... I like the Poly Planar MRD60 and the Clarion XMD3. I tossed between XM and Sirius for a while, but being able to listen to my poor NY Jets lose on Sundays is a clear advantage for Sirius.

Anyway, thoughts and opinions on either of these head units?

How about the Clarion APX480M amp?

Poly MA6900 6x9 speakers or the 6x9 MB Quarts?

How about the Clarion 10" Sub?

Thanks in advance ...
Rick

have had 2 clarion amps on two boats - works great

had the clarion sub in my last boat - good but keep it away from your gps, autopilot, etc - big magnet

had the clarion head unit - no problems but very little EQ adjustment

ditch the head unit and replace it with an ipod...

the two way clarion speakers with seperate tweeters are also nice and reliable

The PolyPlanar speakers sound great, but put a little power behind them and plan to replace tweeters on a regular basis. That was my experience with them as well as a buddy of mine.

Ditch the sat radio all together. Tape the game on VHF or Tivo and watch later on. Sat radio is a ripoff. Listen to your own music on CD and MP3's.

Have a JVC system on my Whaler & have a SIRUS system connected to it. Wouldn't trade it for the world. When I'm 60 - 80 miles off shore I have the music I want without any hassle all for 9.99 a month. When I'm finished fishing I just pull Sirus box out of the cradle take it to my truck & listen to Sirus on the way home. To me it's not a rip off but a great deal. Cheers ........ Tom

My story: No doubt I'll be listening to my own CD's much of the time... but for 9.99 a month or whatever, I figure "ah what the heck".

Truth: Wife wants satellite radio on the boat.

I went to Best Buy and got a sony head unit (bought the extended warranty) that plays MP3's. Put the head unit in a Poly Planner waterproof enclosure. I mounted this and a Sirrus SAT radio unit in my elect box. I also have a iPod that can easily be taken with me. I think I have all the basis covered.

Bird, if you think SAT radio is a rip off you haven't used it. MP3's are great, but they can't compare to it. Nothing like being 60 miles offshore and listening to a NFL game....LIVE!

So, I suppose you dont have cable or Sat TV, because they are also ripoffs. Oh, and dont buy bottled water or bagged ice either, both huge rip offs.

I have Sat and cable TV, and YES, by FAR both are probably the biggest rippoff on the planet today!! ESPECIALLY Cable TV. Cable TV should be free!! The cable companies make BILLIONS BEFORE we pay them a penny from the advertising. So why are we ALSO paying them?? Trust me, there is no question about it, CABLE TV IS the biggest rippoff on the planet. BUT, this will change VERY shortly, cause Direct TV is going to be brought into EVERY living room for 1/2 the price via the copper lines your phone line comes in on. It's already being done in my area of LI as a test with Verizon. You will get digital TV, two phone lines and a high speed braodband Internet connection all from your local phone company ALL for about the same price your now paying for just cable TV ALONE. Can't wait!!!

Anywho, all that has NOTHING to do with why Sat Radio is a ripoff. It's a ripoff cause who in there right mind wants to listen to music somebody ELSE has picked out?? I just don't get that?? Yes, I have used sat radio, I think it sucks. I want to play the music I have picked out, not what some record company has paid SIRRIUS radio to play. And YES, they get paid to play music from the record companies. which of course is where the real "rippoff" comes from. You are paying for in a monthly fee what was already paid for.

I have the Poly MRD60 with Bose speakers (no amp). It works great, but it DOES NOT PLAY CDR/CDRW, or MP3's. I had to buy one of their add-on accessory's that connects to a ribbon cable coming out of the unit to add a wireless remote and yet another accessory to for audio input, so that I could plug my Ipod into the unit.

Would I buy the MRD60 again? No. I'd buy a non-marine grade Sony and their wired remote. More and better features for less money.

To it's credit, the MRD60 is well built and has good sound quality, and has never skipped playing back CD's in 3 foot chop.

I have the Clarion XMD3 and the wired remote. The head unit is mounted in my cabin and I've got the remote, which is fully waterproof, on my instrument pannel. I'm planning on adding the Sirius turner (which is an add on) but there are other electronics, tabs, etc. in line first! The remote, which has a small LCD display and a backlight, will control all of the sources (AM/FM/CD/CD changer/SAT)

I really like the unit. And the remote is great. One point, although the head unit fits in a standard DIN receiver cutout the faceplate on the clarion is huge, probably twice the size of a standard radio.

I'm using the Poly Planar speakers but can't remember the models. They were fairly inexpensive and sound pretty good.

One other note, if you get the remote you need to get the extension cable, the attached cable is less than a foot long. I ended up buying the head unit and remote from one mail order company and had to get the cable from another. If you want I can dig up my records on the vendors, got good service from both of them.

I have the PolyPlanar head unit, no amp, Polk atrium speakers (mil-spec saltfog test passed, which is no easy feat) and JVC marine speakers in the cabin. Also, XM radio which I swap out in the car and boat. I'm happy with everything so far.

simplfy your world and load all your cd's into an iPod or Rio hard drive player - mount a Clarion 4 ch amp below - buy 4 speakers and rock your world...total cost on ebay is about 650.00

and if you're on this board you have the capability to digitize your music...
