Default Sat Phone Cost

The last time I checked Sat phone rates was a year ago and there's a lot going on in the Sat phone business with fewer providers and tumbling prices. Iridium and Globalstar are the two leaders in hand-held phones (in fact, about the only players) and the Iridium system has been the most widely accepted system - their low earth satellites means there is no time lag when you talk. A few facts:

Globalstar GSP 1600 Cost: $895 + $70 add'l equip
Iridium 9505 Cost: $1,495

Reoccuring Costs:
Globalstar: $25/month + $1.50/min
Iridium: $50 activation fee, $20/month + $1.50/min

I know some of the phones can now be purchased in the $500 range. Anyone have any updates/current information on phone cost and usage costs in Canada, the Americas, and the Caribbean??

Bump... A friend got a refurb sat phone for $395 I think. Not sure of the rates. What about the stability of the satellite companies?

Did you get the same one as Erez? Which service and do you remember which phone?

Jags,

The companies are not going away...Iridium is largely supported through government contracts...we use the Satphones and my unit has a dozen or so. Globalstar has a huge customer base and is also quite solid.

That is good to hear. I wonder if there is a difference in quality of service?

Coverage is probably the bigger issue. You may want to check and see if they have a coverage map on their websites...and post them here

I have the Globalstar 1600 in the Pelican box and have completely enjoyed using it. I paid right @ $500 and have the $30/month tht includes 30 minutes. I have a close friend that has the Iridium phone. All things being equal the Iridium phone is superior, but all things are not equal when it comes to cost of the two. Globalstar is hands down cheaper and to me a better deal overall.

I don't know what Erez got. We bought it about 2 months ago, but just activated it last week. Bought it from Consumer Marine for $395 refurbished. It is at home, but I believe the phone is a Motorola. The service is provided by Globalstar. We got it because in the fall the guys at work have to be able to get us on Saturdays or Sundays for a possilbe issue, we missed a lot of trips because we needed to be in "Cell Range". Also, we can let family know that we are going to be late and they can in return call us if they here severe weather is headed our way.

using iriduim and like it. by the time you are done the cost per minute is close on both. iridium now allows you to pre purchase minutes in a bundle or they will bill you.

That's right - Iridium can be had with no monthly charge and the minutes you prepay never expire. $1.50 a minute. Don't count on using this option for incoming calls. I think they run about $5.00 a minute.

Bad information being posted here. Current Iridium "prepaid card" plan requires that you buy 500 minutes and the card expires after 1 year. They also offer a 75 minute card which has a 30 day validity. The 200 minute card also had a one year life...but it has been discontinued and is no longer offered.

think twice i spoke to the company that i get my iridium minutes from last week. they told me (i do have the card) that there were no additional fees. i just added minutes to my card (they said if i want a new card they would waive the $50 sending fee) with no other costs than the minutes. they also said i can just use the phone and they will bill me. the minutes are coming from a company in canada.

i will get additional info.
