Default apple iPod+ Clarion amp=heaven!

As an avid offshore fisherman, I was going thru CD's like crazy - saltwater eats them up. I could get cable radio (XM) but I still want to hear my music collection, when I want it..so on my new boat I did'nt install a cd/radio - just a Clarion 4 ch amp and 4 speakers. Feeding the amp thru some radio shack cabling is my Apple iPod which I downloaded my entire CD collection into and can play in shuffle mode or in individual playlists.
This is the hot ticket - I can now fish for days without hearing the same song twice, but when I need Buffett, I can find his whole collection in 5 seconds. And my CD's are in the attic forever!

if your serious in your question, not much...

40 gig ipod off ebay - 450

clarion refurbishished 4 x 60 rms marine amp off ebay - 125 (bass sales, inc)

infinity speakers off ebay - 250

and as somone else said - no huge whole in the dash for a head unit that will corrode in a year...

How big of an amp do you really need to provide decent sound on the drift from your iPod ? Since I've heard that amplifiers draw a decent bit from the batteries I want to get only the necessary equipment. I run a 24 Albemarle and would probably install two speakers, maybe 4.

Nice article, BTW.

Specifically what cables were required from radio shack?

Thanks,
Ben

it's the size of a pack of cigarettes - new ipod coming out tomorrow- got to apple.com to investigate - I believe Rio makes a few hard drive players so check them out too. The thing that makes the ipod stand out is what made Apple great: the software - Itunes is very neat and easy to use. You also have the ability to go to the apple itunes store and buy songs for 99 cents. I use it to buy those one hit wonders that you gotta have for a good fishing mix (e.g Zombies, Rascals, etc.).Pleae no comments on my taste...

I run two 1000cca group 24 batts and the amp has played all day anchored with no probelm. If you're always in the water and your speakers are mounted facing inside the boat, you might want to add a 3rd batt for safety as you will be playing loud...

If you have just two speakers, I think the smaller clarion marine amp 2 x 50 watt would be cheaper and less of a drain.

I'll put a pic of my dash on the photo forum...

Ben

Re: radio shack cables, I had to go look...

if you are mounting a 2 ch speaker amp - male headphone jack splits into two RCA jacks - RCA jacks into the amp

If you are mounting a 4 ch- 4 speaker amp - cable above, plus (2) - single female rca jack splits into two male RCA's - each left and right RCA connects into front and rear female rca's on the amp

Wire the amp to a 12v power switch on dash - seperate green 12v wire turns it on...use very heavy guage wire to go straight to the batt for main power

except for fishing the wire to speakers and batt and cutting speaker holes - install takes all of about 30 minutes

set amp for med volume bass and treble gain, and then use ipod volume control

If this sounds cryptic, just print this out and take it into a radio shack and look for one of the high school age employees with a pen protector..he'll know...

I was serious. The setup sounds great but I may be too set in my ways. I am starting to burn CD's that I like and if they get scratched or broken, I go back and burn another. I know, not as good a set-up but I am into "simple" and that seems simpler to me. It may not be simpler but less for me to learn or remember. I would still like to personally see a setup like yours.

the setup is quite simple - when you get on the boat connect the headphone jack to the ipod and hit play...and 400 cd's (the amount I own) are avaialble within 5 secs of scrolling to the artist, song, or album. Or hit shuffle and it willserve up all you have in random order. The songs are also CD quality by the way.

I have installed the whole system for two other friends with boats, a 36 foot Tiara and a new 25 foot Wellcraft. Both will never go back to the the radio, XM or anything else.

Believe me, apple has made this work for those of us who are not into computers - this is far simpler that using a GPS unit...

Sounds like a great idea!

I imagine with a piece of velco, you could just stick the iPod, or other MP3 player, right to the dash.

This Ipod idea on the boat sounds like an great idea, I assume it would eliminate skipping as there is no disc playing, it has been digitized. If you don't have a head unit and the Ipod plugs directly into an amp, how do you control volume, bass/treble etc? Can you do that from the Ipod? If not, then you need a basic base unit to plug the Ipod in to control those functions, right? I assume that the Ipod is not very waterproof, so where are you putting it on the boat? Thanks,
Doug

the ipod has about 25 EQ settings from jazz to rock to spoken word, etc - .I usually set it on rock or r&b - also , the amp has seperate bass gain so you can mess with that too and choose your crossover points - but hell, we're not talking your living room here..with all that's going on in the boat - wind, engines, etc - it sounds fine...

regarding weather - it sits in my electronics box so it is protected...it is built with a face that is water tight and all the controls are touch sensitive - remember, it is made to wear n the waist for jogging, etc. It comes off the boat with me everytime I dock - actually goes home with me and plays thru my stereo in it's holder...

see my setup in the photo section...
