I was in Boaters World the other day and over heard a guy telling the sale's rep that his Mapcreate 6 (in his Lowrance unit) produces better inshore details of south Louisiana then his Navionics gold xl3. But the Navionic's does better job for offshore contours, etc.
Can anyone confirm or rebut on the inshore detailing? rcouret

my opinion of mapcreate vs. nav gold is that the bass fishermen must be easily entertained.

Ok sea_dad, I know sarcasm when I see it. But, here in south Louisiana we got salt water and marsh in 60 miles. Lots of marsh with lots on details. So can you tell me about inshore detail on mapcreate, or you just want to pick on those bass fishermen. I'll except either. rcouret

I'm not picking on them. I think mapcreate is really useless.
tell you what gimmie some lat/long coordiantes and I'll snap a pic of the area and post it for you. That will cover mapcreate. Than all you need to do is look at any noaa chart that covers the area and you'll know what nav gold will look like. I believe maptech uses the same charts as navionics and they are online.

Sea_Dad, I have the Navionic gold. I was just trying to find out if the mapcreate was any better for inland detail. If you have mapcreate I would appreciate pic of 29.43.908 North and 89.25.365 West at 2 and 4nm. BTW..I have another reply coming your way on a different thread. rcouret

I've got MapCreate6, and find that the map detail for coastal areas is not even as good as that provided by the built-in basemaps... They show really rough points on the outline of bays, lakes and channels.
In the MapCreate screen capture below, I've zoomed into a part of West Galveston Bay, where the marsh and shallow bay meet the ICW and the gulf. The level of detail is would not be nearly sufficient to run the bayous.

The basemap built into the unit provides a significantly higher level of detail, as you see in the screen capture from the emulator for my combo unit.

As for the claim that the MapCreate provides better inshore details than the Gold chip, I seriously doubt that. MapCreate isn't intended to be your Chart! It's a really good tool for recording and organizing waypoints, and planning your routes.
(side note) I put over 900 waypoints into MapCreate to make Tom Hilton's North Texas Gulf Atlas digitial one rainy weekend. Now I've got LOTS of target clutter on my display.

well as you can see (barely) it's a red bouy marker. This is at 10 miles and the details do not get any better at any resolution. Like I said bass fisherman must be easily entertained if they have been using this to plan there trips.
