Default internal vs external gps

OK dumb ? I know but looking for the easy (cheaper) way out. Will an internal antenna gps work through a windshield and a bimini? Do garmin gps with internal antennas have a jack that will allow for an external antenna as well? I decided to just buy anew unit for the boat I just ordered and am looking at the garmin gps and I am unsure if I really need the external antenna as it looks like it would be a PIA to have to mount the antenna and what about VHF antenna placement with GPS external? Do they make some type of combo unit? thanks.

An internal antenna will work fine through a windshield and bimini.

Yes. The GPS radio signals will go through a bimini and a windshield without any trouble.

I have a Garmin GPS-III. works great in my truck with al the windows closed. I have it on the dash-board. I also use it on my boat, as a back-up, where it's tucked under the windscreen and under a bimini.

BTW, since you imply cheaper is better, take a look at the Garmin 172C with internal antenna. I just got the 178C (combo unit with sounder) version of it, and am pretty pleased with it so far.

I just installed a Lowrance 3300C with an external GPS module (antenna) - only I mounted the module inside the fiberglass electronics box which is completely enclosed by a fixed aluminum panel which replaced the door - I velcro'd the module to the bottom of the box - it works great - locking onto satellites in 15 seconds and never lost track in 11 hours of use.

That was my thinking so I got a Garmin 182c with internal antenna. I even tested for signal strength with a hand held unit. As it turned out it worked quite well most of the time but not all the time. I finally converted the unit to accept an external antenna which increased the signal and number of satelites greatly. BTW this was on a center console with a sunbrella top.

Cool so I will just buy the 182 c and the chip for the bay or the 172.I will check out the lowrance as well now. Very helpful thank you

I think I will get a high end handheld with dhc? that is submersible and the gps and not worry about all the anntenas being mounted.I just cruise around by the bay bridge so far.
