Well, considering that half of your budget will have to go into the antenna and its mount that doesn't leave much.

I think that the best radio you could get for them money would be had by going to E-Bay and finding an ICOM M-120 or similar (later than an M-100) for around $75, or maybe $100 if it was like new.

Hi Conrad, Wattage may not be so much of a concern as features.

One feature that I would like to have is placing the speaker in the hand piece. My entry-level Uniden does not do that. To have it right there - less than a foot away from my ears - would be nice when needed. At this point, it's about 3 or 4 feet away when I'm running.

Also, look at the size of the units. It's rather tight in my console, and I've seen other VHFs that are HALF the size of mine.

Thom! you outed my source for radios! I've been buying Icom M80's and M100's when nice ones pop up on ebay for $75-$100 . . . oh well . . . now there will be more bidders. I don't care for the M120's - you like them?

West marine has/had the Intrepid LE on clearance for $150. That only leaves $100 for the antenna and the mount. Kind of tough...

I picked up the M-100 for a $100.00 and the radio is the best I ever had, it has intercom and hailer functions built in, puts out 25 watt's consistently.
A good choice for a used radio.

Conrad,
If your 250 budget is for Radio only, buy the Icom M402. Just a great radio.
