Default Icom M-127 Hailer ??

Anyone know how to adjust the hailer volume on an M-127, the hailer function works but only at a low volume, the fog signals are pretty useless if no one can hear them. I looked in the manual but couldn't figure it out.

I have the same unit. If you want to use it as a hailer you'll need the 30 Watt booster to be heard. I got one, and it's a couple of hundred bucks, and easy to install. It just needs a power lead and comes with a jack for the hailer hook-up to the back of the M-127.

Joe,

I went looking all over the place here to find my M-127 Manual to look it up myself. I've got the hailer hooked up but to tell you the honest truth other than to play with it while doing other stuff I have almost never used it - just once on the water that I can recall. Somehow I had it in my head that you just turned the volume knob to adjust it - but that it wouldn't adjust when you were speaking on the Hailer, you had to adjust it, then speak, and if it was to loud get off the hailer, turn it down, and get back on the hailer. I think that was how it worked, but I honestly could not say for sure. If I can find my manual I'll get back to you and let you know. By the way folks, while its not the world's loudest the standard built-in amp for its internal hailer works pretty good as far as volume goes, I've never felt any need for the amp for it, though I have seen a couple of them sell on E-Bay for reasonable prices.

In hail mode key the mike and adjust the volume. I am pretty sure that this is how the volume is adjusted. (You will see a depiction of the volume level on the screen when you do this.) If this doesn't work, let me know and I'll check mine out this weekend and let you know how to change it.

I also should have been clearer in my original post. The 10 Watts is fine as a hailer. I got the booster for use as a foghorn, as we get fog around here in June when the air is warm, and the water cool.

Thanks guys, I (along with the help of 2 friends) figured it out, Sailfish272 is about the closest to being right. As I recall, you have to be in hail mode, key the mike, and rotate the channel selector knob, the selector knob controls the volume of the hailer horn, go figure . It works fine now, nice and loud, even without the 30 watt amp. Nothing like reading the manual slowly and carefully.
