Best way to cut hole for speakers ?

Getting ready to install some 6 1/2" round JVC Marine speakers. Any easy or good way to cut the holes out? Figured I would ask now before I start cutting.

Thanks

Rotozip works great just use a firm, steady hand as it will "take off".

Use a Rotozip saw with a Fiberglass bit installed. Do not try using a regular bit.

It really depends on where you are installing them. If it's a thin fiberglass panel the Rotozip will work fine. That's what I used on my Contender for the forward bulkhead. If it's a thicker cored panel you will want a hole saw or a jigsaw. I used a jigsaw to cut the hole in the top of the console for my compass.

Birdman is right on with the Rotozip and the fiberglass bit. I used the Duracut Zip Bit for Cement Board and Plaster/Lath. RZ250 1/4". About $10 at Home Depot. It says "works great on fiberglass and stucco".

I used the hole cutting attachment for the Rotozip and it made perfect holes. Adjustable diameter and it uses a pilot hole for rotating on. Take it slow and it will work great. Good luck.

Rotozips are a dream to use. Just be very careful of what's underneath the glass, i.e. wires, and/or fuel lines!!!

Another vote for the rotozip - well, Dremel.. It really is a dream....

Actually, I use a Dremel with the roto-zip bade... I like them so much I have 2 of 'em - a cordless and a corded and also bought that pen/wand attachment... It can't be beat, when you need it, you really need it!

Can't beat it and when the hole is cut, you can smooth edges with the sanding wheel... Mark the hole with a marks-a-lot or grease pen, don't try to tape the template in place.

Later,
Chris

Another vote for Rotozip with the circle cutter.

I'd suggest you make a template first. Then use the tool you feel most comfortasble with and take your time.

Basically the same as a Dremel, just more specific (and more powerful) for cutting holes..

Instead of a blade it uses a part that's a cross between a drill-bit and a round file. Like a router only thinner.

Another vote for the RotoZip. On projects like this, I like to layout the location. Check for clearance behind. Then apply masking tape to the surface well beyond the circumference of the hole. The masking tape will prevent any scratches and will also prevent any chipping of the fiberglass especially should you choose to use a Jig Saw which would be my second choice of tools. Then after the cuts are complete, peel off the remaining tape and everthing is nice and clean.

Thanks for all the replys. Will look into the roto-zip thing at Lowes. Maybe the Admiral will get it for me for Christmas.

Thanks again.

If you decide to use the jig saw, get the blades that cut on the down stroke. Much less chance of chipping the gel coat. Also make sure there is no "water" on the other side of the hole http://thehulltruth.com/infopop/emot...on_biggrin.gif

In Agreement,

I used a jig saw when I put my speakers in. I made a template on the PC and printed it out, cut it out, made sure the speaker would fit, then I taped the template to the console area. I covered the entire area with wide masking tape to prevent gel coat chipping and marring with the saw. I drilled a 1/2 inch
starter hole and in seconds was done. I used an 18 tooth blade on the saw. I found that mounting the speakers as low as possible on the center console produced the best sound because the sound bounces off of the gunwales.

ps..I have a Roto Zip, used it a couple of times. I find it hard to control because of the power, it can run away in a flash. I can cut much straighter and more precise with my jig saw.

If your rotozip runs away you are using it incorrecty. The same principles that go fo r router still aplly - the direction of the hole (counter clockwise vs clockwise) makes a big differnece, and you never back up to go over a spot again.
