Default GPS antenna

A friend of mine has a 21' Parker CC with a hard top. This Spring he's getting a Garmin 182c. He wants to know if he needs an external antenna to set on top of the hard top. He's gotten different stories about whether the hard top would interfere with the signal. Thanks.

Default GPS antenna

Just recently got a 182c with the internal antenna. I placed it under my fabric t-top after testing for signal strength with a handheld unit. The 182c worked very well most of the time but not all of the time. I finally bit the bullet and hooked up an external antenna. It now sees a lot more satelites and works flawlessly. My reco is get the external and be done with it. BTW the 182c is fantastic. I like it way better than my Raymarine combo unit with gps on a 10 inch color screen.

Definitely get an external antenna. Anything between it and the satellites will impede it's performance.
