Default Northstar 958

I'm in the eleventh hour of consideration between:

Northstar 958
--or--
Northstar 952 / Furuno 582L / Furuno 1731 Mk3

to rig on a Reg 26.........

Comments appreciated !

Thanks,
Mike

I have the 951 and the 1731. Would'nt trade either of them. Very user friendly and fast. Had the 600L and changed to the simrad EQ42. The furuno was good but the screen was way to small and lousey resolution.

I think that's an easy one. That big color display on the 958 is a great thing to have for all the functions -- plotter, radar, and sounder. You would end up with much smaller, lower resolution displays using the separate units you listed and a mono radar. I also think it would be a struggle to fit those units in the console on a 26, probably requiring one to be in the overhead box. I could only get a single 10" Furuno 1833C display and a Garmin 2006 in the panel on my 32 Regulator, which has a bigger console than the 26. The 958 will fit very nicely.

I would get an inexpensive gps/plotter that uses Navionics cards as a backup, just in case.

The Northstar radar is made by Sitex, I believe. I have not seen one. The sounder module is excellent -- I have seen one of those in operation.

I've got the N/S 952, 582 L sounder and the Furuno 1832 (10" display) Radar. They all work great together, and I'd highly recommend them. My preference is for separate units, but the 958 is a beautiful machine. When the 958 displays radar, sounder and plotter at the same time the screens for each was a litle small. I saw the 958 at the NY boat show, it's a BIG unit. The first thing I would do is make sure that you'll have the room for it on your boat. You can't go wrong with either set-up, it's really a matter of personal preference. Good luck!

Saltdog:

Good feedback, thanks. Given the availabilty of space, the 958 fully occupies the lower elex box, although the upper box will accomodate my two Icom VHF's and a RayNav 300 or Furuno 36, or something along that size.

If the 958 ever craps out, I would expect I can still find my way home.

As I understand it, Northstar bought some of the Anaritsu Radar Technology (Simrad) and just repackaged it.

Mike,

I think the combination unit / big screen is the way to go. I have a Simrad CE42 (10.4" Display). If you are concerned about navigation system failure, get a hand held GPS as a back up.

try going for the furuno 1833, I have it on my Regulator and it is buy far the best system out there. My friend has a 68 garlington and in jelous of that unit. He wants to upgrade. Get the 24" 4kw dome with it. Plus make sure you use a antenna mount on a Regulator. I had to talk to several people at regulator before getting a solid answer on this. It take c-map card, has the 1kw fish finder and has radar, with radar overlay. I do not think you can beat this system. The only thing that gets me alittle is that the processor on the redraw is alittle slow. IF you want some pics of how i mounted it in mine let me know.

I know some guys are going to at me cross eyed... (it's a Scout/Garmin thing )
But I put the Simrad CA42 on my Pursuit last year and it worked great. The new CA44 coming out this week has some minor keypad changes and a faster processor for quicker redraws. The sun view screen is excellent in an open boat... even direct sunlight doesn't wash it out. You should definitely take a look.

Marlintini,

Where did you get the info about the new 44 series Simrad? I checked their web site and could find nothing. I would like to know more. Also, I second your thumbs up for the Simrad SunView display, my boat has no top and my display sees a lot of direct sun light, so I am constantly benefiting from this great technology.

Kevin,

I spoke with the Mid-Atlantic Regional Manager at the NY Show on Sunday. The new unit was coming to the show Tue.

YellowReg, I have to disagree with the suggestion that you consider a Furuno 1833C. I own one, so I think I am qualified to express an opinion. The radar and fishfinder are terrific, but the plotter sucks. There is absolutely no comparison to a Northstar plotter.

32 huh? Holy $h!t man ...... nice.......

Are you going to be able to keep it where you are, 10.5' beam and all ?

Went with the 958 for the lower box, with a fixed 'get home' GPS (Raynav 300) in the upper.

I probably ended up going OB on the elex... I'll have to keep the motors running to provide enough current to keep it running.

I was going to top mount an auto-release 406 beacon, but after my weekend at Mohegan Sun, I've been reduced to carrier pidgeon and airhorn.

See ya by the tower for spring BFT...

i just bought the 958 unit with the fish finder option as well. I was so impressed with this unit..I opted to buy a seperate radar, just if the northstar goes down , i could navigate with the radar. But i looked at all the units, the 958 was way above the others in all areas. Its real easy to use as well, The display on the unit is just beautiful. dont have to squint looking at the screen anymore
