Go here and look at the new features, including support now for 1000 waypoints!!! Holy crap that's a lot. It's beta and there are a ton of warnings, but once certified, it's gotta be a good thing.

Chris,

I'm just wondering where they found the extra memory, not so much for the additional waypoints but for the additional track memory. Mighty glad to see it tought.

Know what I wish Garmin would come up with? A subdirectory capability for way points. Scrolling through the list at anythin over about 100 is a real pain, so the 1,000 number, while looking nice, seems to me to be dam near unmanagable.

By the way, meant to give you a call all this week. Will sometime soon. One of the major disadvantages of age, the tooth gets longer and the gray matter gets shorter .......

Thom you hit the nail one the head, even my Garmin 126 has 500. That is alot of waypoints. Were we fish out of Canaveral the fish is so diverse a GPS with subdirectories would be great.

I'm guessing that the reason everything is being dumped when you load the new firmware is that they have found a better compression algorythm for waypoints, routes and tracks. Since they are going from firmware 2.x to 3.x, this would indicate that the developers feel that the changes are quite significant - thus the generation level change.

Thom, I got something like 3600 free weekend minutes on my mobile, so I'll call you today if you're gonna be around. I'm going to portsmouth trailer this morning to get a receiver put on our free truck we just got. hehehe :

Maybe I'll hit your cell while you are waiting. You can only ogle the ladys at Portsmouth trailer for a while before you have to start marching up and down the isles thinking of reasons to buy stuff you'll never need.

That makes good sense on the compression change. I am wondering why Garmin would go to a Beta release for a GPS, and particularly one so popular as the 76Map. Make a mistake on that one and you could upset a lot of people. I think I'll hold off till the final release on this one.

I did download the update for the 2006 and stuck it in already. There are two things on the list for it that very little is said about but may be more important than they appear.

The first one says something about enhanced DSC support. Now, you gotta ask, what does that mean? Is it possible that the 2006 will now do the Standard Horizon trick of displaying the location of DSC calls on the screen? Or even worse, is it possible that Garmin has found a way to force a VHF to disclose your location to an inquireing DSC caller? That second one is the main reason you wouldn't catch me dead with a Standard Horizon chartplotter on the boat.

The second one is a water temperature log that will allow you to record as you go. I don't know if its use is restricted to units equiped with the depthfinder acccessory (another thing you wouldn't catch me dead with) or if the log will be displayable somewhere else I haven't found yet. Wel'll see.
