Default Northstar 6000i

Lets hear some feedback of this unit from their owners.
It's been out a while now, so lets hear it.

i have no first hand experience... but the guy who had his topaz come out of the factory right before mine does says he hates it.. if it was not fishing season, he would rip it right off.

I'm (so far) happy with mine. However, I do not use it for radar, only chartplotting and sounder. I think I might be in a minority here, though. If you do a search, you'll find a few less than than thrilling reviews on the unit. There's a few things I really like about it, although I'm sure other units offer similar features/benefits:

- It's easy to learn to use. Waaaaaaaay easy. I like that because everyone aboard can participate in more than just cranking fish. To me, it just seems like everyone has more fun when they can take a turn at "captain".

- The sounder has a feature called Soundtrac which let's me scroll back through the video to a piece of structure and then navigate to it. I like that because the artificial reefs have a lot of "scattered" structure.

- It already has the ability to add a video feed without buying anything extra. I plan on putting a rearward facing camera on my t-top.

- But most important, (and I stress that this is not unique to the 6000i ) It gets me to where I'm going and finds me my wrecks. Isn't that what it's supposed to be all about?

I, for one, would love to hear the REASONS that the Topaz owner "hates his."

I've had mine in use since March and although you can certainly find a few shortcomings, in general I'm quite pleased.

Installation: A REAL PAIN!!! I couldn't have done it without professional help. You would like to think that when staying with one brand everything would just plug in...Not here. The installation guide for the radar didn't even mention the 6000i. It was designed for the 958 and you've got to splice the wires to make it fit the 6000i.

Chartplotter: We all know of Northstar's instant redraw and the 6000i is no different. Ease of use was already pointed out and I'm in agreement. It may not have as many optional settings as some of it's competitors but it seems to have everything I need. It would be nice if it could save tracking permanently instead of only for a certain amount of time but I'll usually just mark waypoints along a traveled path if I care to repeat it and that works for me. It's hard for me to compare with other units because my last unit was also a Northstar (951XD)......Which is why I bought this one....It never let me down nor spent time in the repair shop.

As pointed out in prior posts the soft keys that take up part of the screen (8.4" in my case) are annoying and seem a bit of a waste of space but I'm promised by my dealer a software upgrade is due out any day now to remedy that.

The split screen has but one option, chart and radar (I have no sounder). It would be nice if I could have radar with the steer screen but with the 8.4 in screen and those soft keys I don't use the split screen option because it's just too small.

Radar: A lot of people seem to knock Northstar's (Koden's) units but I can't seem to find much wrong with them. My 4KW unit with the 24" dome is very sensitive and I CAN see birds if they're within the three mile range but I do seem to have trouble with target separation outside of 3 miles. I do miss the dials that my old Furuno unit had for gain and clutter adjustments. Dealing with the buttons and the cursor pad on the Northstar to adjust settings is a bit of a pain.

Overlay feature: LOVE IT!!! Dead balls accurate with the chart for things like permanent markers and bridges and lets you know where the buoys REALLY are instead of what the chart says.Best thing since sliced bread!!.

Depthfinder: don't have it. Went with Furuno's 600l instead. Didn't want everything on one screen.

What I ask of any piece of electronics is not for a thousand options that I don't need. I ask that it works day in and day out without fail...It'll be a few years before I can say for sure but so far so good.

There was a thread a few months ago on someone who bought a 6000i and returned it due to his dislike of design and lack of features. I seached for the thread and found the URL but it seems like a dead link, now!~

Perhaps Wiley can 'dig it up' since it was a good, objective review!
