Hi:

We have a Ray Jefferson 5700 "flasher" on board, as our secondary depth sounder. On our trip down from the San Juan Islands it literally wore out. Seems the mechanical comutator springs just went south.

I Love this old machine, it has served us well; in fact, there were times when I watched it more closely than our Furuno sounder.

Does anyone know where I could find a replacement? The transducer is fine, it's just the flasher which I want.

I would settle for a non-working unit, as long as the parts I need are in good condition.

Failing a replacement unit or parts, does anyone know of a sounder which can use the existing transducer??

TIA
Bob

Tamara B- Welcome to THT!

Very nice vessel! I liked the pictures of the re-fit and the interesting tale of your travels from the Northwest ! When does the story get completed?

Ray Jefferson flashers are no longer made, I believe. I would watch e-bay for your particular model. There are several RJ products posted right now. ALso, check out any of the Marine Electronics installers. They may have a handle on how to get units to scavenge. You never know, the next boat they do, might be something replacing a Ray Jefferson!

If you know the make and model number of your current transducer, there is a way that you might be able to determine what new units might be compatible. AIRMAR is probably the world's largest maker of x-ducers. If you go to their web at www.airmar.com, you could check to see what units and models can use your x-ducer. Or, call them or send them an e-mail. They are very helpful people.

Hope this helps!

Good luck!

Big E:

Thank for the welcome!

I have checked ebay several times looking for the thing; lots of RJ stuff, but never the model I am looking for.

I will check out the link you gave me; thanks!

As far as when the story will be completed; probably in the late winter/ spring. We were gone from NY for almost a year; doing our computer consulting all the time via a variety of connectivity systems I installed before we left the San Juans. However, we are currently up to our necks in backlog work, both for the business and getting Tamara B ready to go to sea again in the spring.

Upon our arrival in NY, we discovered to our horror, that our rent-stabilized Manhattan appartment had been taken over by the slum-lord landlord, even though we had paid the rent on-time for the entire trip. Every land-side possession is GONE! We are now up to our knees in litigation in Supream Coart, sueing the pants off of him..

We are full-time living aboard, and will be forced to winter here in NY; Mill Basin actually, a very secure "hurricane Hole".

I do not know the make/model of the Transducer, It's a thru-Hull; all I can see from the inside is the fairing block and the wires :-(( When we Haul-out next summer, I will have a closer look, but I fear I will not be able to determine the needed info even then.

What I LOVE about the RJ, is it is simply a depth sounder, it has no CRT :-)) and while it worked, it gave me more reliable info than the furuno "fish finder", which is great until you run over a mass of weeds, or turbulance created by a tug.... or even a school of fish. What I want to know is how deep the water is, not whats between me and the bottom.

Thanks again, you'll be hearing more from us in the near future. We have to winter on the water here this year, and I am a bit concerned and preparing for that...

Bob
