I have had half a dozen Iridium phones through the years at work. They will pretty much work anywhere (although I believe they have a blackout around Cuba). All of my experience has been with the Motorola phones, so I can't comment on the equipment that you mentioned, but can say that the quality of transmission is pretty good, but not near cellphone or landline.

Nice thing is that unlike Inmarsat, they don't require that you point the antenna at a particular satellite, all you need is clear line of site of the sky.

There is Iridium service now with no monthly fee, a $20 activation, and $1.50 per minute usage fee. Not a bad deal for a seasonal offshore boater.
