Cool is this possible or just stupid???????

i have an 87 galaxy admiral 199, 19ft. problem: no radio or speakers installed. the boombox is getting a little in the way so now its time to think of installing something.
hypothesis: is it possible to splice the power/ground/acc to a cigarette lighter plug and just plug it into the cig lighter when i want to play the cd player?????? sounds too good to be true, but since they all run off 12v, i figured its worth a shot asking?

These work a lot better. They are designed for higher amperage and don't come loose.

thanks for the reply. that aside, would the original idea work? also, where would i find the fuses/fuse box? the boats original cig. lighter was completely rusted out so i have to (figure out how to) take the cig. lighter out and replace it with a new one. once i can figure out how to get it out of the dash and then plug up the wires (assuming theyre in ok condition) to the new one, ill be golden. that being said, i dont want to (right away) permanently mount a cd player in the boat, so i just want to plug and play for the time being.

thanks again!

Yes, it (original idea) will work just fine. Number of places have replacement receptacles for cigarette lighter holes. Note that not all are actual "lighters;" they may provide 12v to your accessory, but cannot take a real lighter. If that is a factor for you (lighter functionality) then go to NAPA or some other auto supply. If you don't care about the lighter, then Radio Shack and most any large marine store (West, etc.) have new receptacles.

I would probably agree with edyer to go a bit better. You don't have to go all the way to the plugs he shows, but West and others have a variety of DC sockets and plugs.

Make SURE you watch the polarity on your stereo when you are wiring the plug to it. Not all of them are reverse polarity protected, and if you reverse the + and -, you can fry the unit.

The original idea works fine. Your cigaret plug should have a 20 amp fuse inline with it. Your typical CD player has no more than a ten amp fuse on the hot wire. Good to go!

If you are installing a stereo in the boat why dont you hook up the power and ground for the radio right to the wires leading to your cigarette lighter socket.
