This is one great unit. I agree with Grumpy. Don't get the USB Chip Programmer though. You can't download routes, waypoints, etc with it. You can only download maps with it. Get the serial connector with power adapter. The first time you download maps is a little confusing as you have to select the maps, otherwise you download no maps, even though it looks like it and when you get out on the boat you'll have not charts on the plotter. A one time mistake, that you'll learn from, if you don't get it right the first time!

Again, great unit.

I am considering the 188C but was under the impression that you could not download Bluechart maps to the machine through the serial connector. I thought you had to download them to a chip using the USB chip programmer or purchase a chip with your Bluechart region. I already have the Bluechart CD for my region that I use on a handheld so I would like to avoid purchasing the preprogrammed chips. Also, if you can download directly to the 188c, how much memory does it have?

I don't know about the 188C, but I am sure on the 182C. I bought a memory chip when i bought the 182C and Mapsource Bluechart CD and a USB Programmer. I was able to download unlocked maps through the USB Programmer, but not able to transfer program routes and waypoints that I had stored on the Desktop PC. I called Garmin and they traded the USB for the Serial connector/ w DC power and that was able to not only transfer maps, but also able to transfer routes and waypoints to the 182C. With this you can also store tracking on the GPS and transfer them to the desktop PC. Either method will tranfer the maps.
