Can someone please explain what chart overlay is and how it would to relate to Autopilots. I am getting some new gadgets installed and don't have a real world expanation of what function they perform.

Chart overlay means you have a chart plottwer running with radar superimposed over it. meaning if a bouy is on the chart when the radar hits it, there is a blip. This lets you know that things are as they seem so to speak. If you get a blip beside the bouy, the bouy might have shifted or maybe someone is ties to the bouy with no lights. Well in order to get this feature you have to have a chartplotter and radar that are compatible (DUH ) and something to provide "Heading Data" this data is used to orient the radar to the chart. One way to aquire this data is to get an autopilot as they require much the same data to operate ie Heading This is how they know which way to steer. You can also just buy a heading Sensor and add it without getting an autopilot. As you would expect there are no standards and not all heading sensors, autopilots and chartplotters/overlays are compatible (Even by the same manufacturer) in some cases.

Yea, What he said. You should also understand for the overlay function to work you need one of the new fangled networked systems. Simply interfacing a plotter, radar, and a heading sensor won't do it.

There is a lot of discussion on whether chart overlay is worth it. I find it confusing alot of the time and if you are not running a large screen it get even more cluttered. If you buy a unit that has the capabilty to have chart overlay, You can turn the option on or off. But as mentioned earlier you have to have some devise to give the CP a heading input via heading sensor or from a AP. These can be added later. If you are going to buy an AP, concider one that have heading output and you will not have to buy a heading sensor. Simrad, & TR1 both have these out puts. I think the new furuno has it, but not sure. And I will take the opprotunity to say I think the TR1 is a great choice, especially if you are running outboards.
Good Luck

I'll simply say this. Buying a Radar and Charplotter today, and NOT having the Radar overlay feature is the same as going out buying a Black and White TV today. When was the last time you even saw a Black and White TV at the local electroncis shop?? Well, by next year, the answer will be the same with Radar and charplotter combo units. You will not be able to buy one without it. And why wouldn't you??

The screen is more cluttered is just simply absolutly HOGWASH!! It does not get any easier to view. Compare looking at two units (radar and a charplotter) side by side and they looking at one unit with overlay turned on and I can assure you, not only will you buy one, you will never turn it off and will wonder why you ever had this question.
