Default Speaker mounting

Has anyone utilized existing screw out deck plates for mounting speakers in? I have one mounted in each side of my boat right under the gunwale. I am not comfortable cutting more holes than necessary, but I will if I have to.
I don't mind making existing plate holes larger to accomodate speaker size. I do have plenty of clearance behind for a speaker installation and pulling wires would be simple.

What do you guy's think?

I did it. I had an access hatch for the fuel fill and vent hose connections. I took it out made the hole bigger and presto chango, it is now a speaker. I could still remove the speaker for access.

ave8er,
did you remove the plate totally, or did you cut the center out of the plate "lid" and mount the speaker in that?
