Default Radar - does the performance decrease over time

I have a 24 mile radar unit on a Raytheon SL70. It worked great a year ago. Now it does not seem to work out to 24 miles anymore. In fact it only goes about 12-15 miles or so. Do these units weaken over time? It also is picking up false semi-circlular signals at my 6 and 12 mile settings. The halft circles are the most visible at the 6 mile setting. This used to be my clearest setting. If it is going bad - is it my Radome or the head unit? Any guesses?

The performance should not degrade over time. Either it is working properly or not. Tha't not to say that there isn't an electronic component that is going bad (e.g. capacitor) or that there is a poor connection somewhere.

The problem you describe with the false semi-circles may be attributed to your "main bang" setting or the timing setting.

I've always been told that the magnatron tube or something does degrade over time with a lot of use.I had the same problem with a 10 yr old Furuno I had on a charter boat.

Mine does not get much use at all. However, I do have to move the radome occasionally to get under a bridge. I leave it plugged in and turned off when I do it. But if I am alone I have to hold the radome with one hand while tilted up 90 degrees. Maybe this is the issue? I assumed that it was much more durable since it should be able to take the banging that going into a head sea can cause. Maybe I will just wait for the new Garmin radars..

I have a Raymarine. POS. Shouldn't lose range and degrade but mine has done it since day 1. Raymarine will be happy to ignore your phone calls if you want to contact them. Let me save you the trouble of calling them. If you do call and actually talk to someone, here is how the conversation will go:

Raymarine: How can I help you? Fisheye: My radar isn't working properly. Ray: You installed it wrong. Fisheye: It was working fine but is getting worse over time? Ray: Read the owners manual. Fisheye: I am very familiar with the operation and have read the manual. Ray: Your batteries are dead. Fisheye: My batteries are fine, they are brand new. Ray: It's wired wrong. Fisheye: It was professionally installed and everything has been checked over and over. Installation seems fine. Ray: It is out of warranty. Fisheye: It's 3 months old? Ray: You installed it wrong...

Gave up on Raymarine a long time ago. Made the decision to buy real electronics in the future.

I had the same experience with their L750 FF when the xducer connector imploded. It had been discontinued but still sold in the stores. "I'm sorry sir that particular unit is obsolete. Why not buy a newer model?"

What asses.

But I still bought a raymarine AP.

what an azz.

Not familiar with the SL30 but it use to be you could manually fine tune the receiver (using soft keys and some menu item) and that had a big effect on sensitivity. I would think that would all be automatic these days however.
