Furuno is coming out with a newer model of the 1850DF with a much better LCD, visible in direct sunlight, so make sure you get the new improved model.

Had one, loved it. Also had a 1650 in tower, both were great.

I have this unit with the CMAP chart and a transom mount transducer. If space is limited like me where you can't have a seperate FF and GPS, then this is a great choice. I believe the FF is as good as the Furuno 582L.

My only gripe is that the screen update on the chart is a bit slow. There can be 2-3 second delays when scrolling through the map. I heard Navionics is quicker.

If I were to do it over again, I still would buy this combo unit. Great unit.

I have the Navionics Furuno 1850. The screen is not as bright in sunlight as my Standard Horizon 170, but it has a line of course on chart that the Standard does not. the new Navionics chart is far nicer then the Old CMAP (And a little better then the new CMAP NT). There is a company called Manmachine.com that does screen upgrades for the Furuno 1650 and 1850 which are supposedly much brighter and Daylight Visible. With that I would probably sell the 170.

My local dealer said definitely go with the navionics cartridge. I didn't have any luck finding anything on manmachine.com about screen upgrades. Anybody have a link to it?

I have the 1850 Furuno which I had the screen done by man- machine and I can tell you the sunlight readability is at least 60% better. I love the unit and it is very fast as far as zooming in on different screens. I just bought this unit at the beggining of the year and I can tell you I would buy another. I use the Navionics charts and they are great.
