Hello Everyone,

Sorta of new to the forum, just as new to Offshore fishing. Most of my experience has been with boats associated with small inland lakes. Decided to make the jump to Offshore with a used 1986 Tiara/Pursuit 2600 Cuddy with twin Yamaha 150's. Made alot of improvements to it over the winter with Installation of radar, replacing thru-hulls, installing new switches and fuses holders to switch panel, re-wiring, etc....

My question now concerns fuel monitoring, I've seen alot of old post for Floscan, Navman, and none for Cruzpro. I need help on deciding which to go with. At this point it seems the posts are about 50/50 when it comes to Floscan vs Navman. I plan on doing quite a few long runs out to 60 to 100 miles. I have a total of 195 gals in three tanks (155g main, 2-20g saddle tanks). Only one analog gas guage off of the 155g tank(not accurate by no means). The two saddle tanks are manual guages below the hatch. Cruzpro offers a three tank level guage in one unit with a 2% accuracy (not sure if Cruzpro even should be considered). Floscan gives you consumption rate and total gallons used, their sensors look to be a little more robust than Navman. Navman gives you Consumption rate, total gallons used, gallons remaining (I believe), and if hooked to gps it will give MPG, alot more function than Floscan. Can anybody offer any advice on which one would serve me best and give me more return for the money? What are you using?

I apologize if this subject has been beat to death before.

First of all, the Flowscan 9xxx can also be connected to GPS to give you MPG.

I had a Flowscan 9xxx on my previous boat and didn't have any problems with it. Never checked it for accuracy but never ran out of fuel either.

I just installed a Navman GPS with integrated fuel meter on my current boat. I don't have a lot of time yet on the Navman so I don't know how accurate it is. It does have a way to enter the current fuel load and will report the fuel remaining. The Flowscan doesn't do this (maybe they do now.) It only reports the fuel consumed. You can reset the fuel consumed on tank fill-up and monitor fuel remaining this way.

Navman setup (fuel gauge only) is close to 50% cheaper than the Flowscan 9xxx for twins.

The Navman fuel sending units are all plastic and relatively short hose barbs. Navman also supplies cheesy plastic hose clamps that barely fit around a USCG A1 fuel line.

Flowscan sending unit is metal and set up for threaded fittings. Much Better.

For offshore use, I would definitely go with Flowscan. (I'm on an inland lake. For me, the fuel computer is more of a toy than a necessity.)

I've has a Navman 3100 on 2 different boats. Both were within 1% accuracy on numerous fill ups. Navman is more user friendly than the Floscan 9000 I've used on another boat. The "cheesy plactic clamps" are to keep wrench monkeys from cracking the transducer...I use steel hose clamps and make sure I don't over tighten them. Have had no problems with the ducers and I fish exclusively off shore.

Here's my 2 cents:

I compared prices on the Navman and Flowscan units, and decided to buy Navman. They seem to be well reviewed products, and are much cheaper than the Flowscan. I went with a Navman5100 GPS with transducer. The stand alone Navman 3100 was $325 (found it on the net for $275). The Navman 5100 was $310 plus $75 for the transducer. So for an extra $100 or so, I ended up with the Navman system, which will calculate not only gallons used, gallons left, gallons/hour but also, and most importantly, miles per gallon and range. Plus I have a WAAS enabled GPS unit to use as a backup. So far, I couldn't be happier with the performance of the fuel monitoring system (the GPS is another story, as the font is almost too small to read when the boat is under way)
