Default Best Handheld GPS

What do you consider to be the best handheld gps -- map as well as non map. I am replacing an old garmin 38. As I am getting older, the larger the screen the better.

Spring, I have the Lowrance iFinder and love it. The biggest reason is because it takes the same MMC cards as my LCX 15MT unit and also operates the same with identical buttons and commands. Like you age has crept up so the easier the better. The iFinder's screen measures 1 & 3/4 wide by 2 & 1/4 high, viewable size. Hope this helps....

The Magellan Meridian series are excellent.

The color Meridian was mentioned above. Be cautious, we tried the color and could not read it in daylight. In fact, we had four customers try the color and said the same thing - "can't see the damn thing in daylight!" My suggestion is stay with the Gold, Marine or the Platinum (has built-in electronic compass).

Magellan claims the Sportrak Color screen is better in daylight than the Meridian Color but we did not try it. The Sportrak Color came out after the Meridian Color so maybe they did make a better color screen for the Sportrak.

Also be cautious about the Magellan Mapsend BlueNav map software. While it is great on the computer, when you downlad to the Meridian the contour lines do not appear due to capacity. Magellan's latest firmware update of 5.02 does increase capacity so Magellan's new MapSend DirectRoute software will work. However we have not tested the new firmware update with the BlueNav software yet. That's why I say, be cautious.

Another be carefull point. The refurbished standard Magellan Meridians (brown & green) that have been selling so cheaply on eBay will not accept the new 5.02 firmware.

Sorry this got so long but these are the things you need to know that some dealers either haven't a clue or don't care to tell you.
