Default Garmin 172C - Internal Antenna Question

I'm also looking this unit, the 172C and plan to put it in the electronics box and move my VHF down below the wheel and flush mount it.

Does anyone see any problem with reception with an internal antenna in the electronics box?

I plan to put a compass where the existign Garmin FF is now.

I own a Garmin 162 internal antenna GPS. In my personal experiance, if you let the unit view about a hemisphere of the sky, you will have pretty good success. I think that if you bury it in a box like you show , you will get intermittant reception as you turn throughout the compass. Why don't you mount it temporarily within the box and try it out? It should be easy enough. My $.02.

I would mount them in front of the steering wheel next to the cup holder. if you use them alot it can be a pain looking up at them all the time. don't seem like an internal antenna would work in an electronics box. i know mine won't under my boat shed.

Back again! Rotate the radio 90 degrees and fasten it to the left inside of the box. Put the fishfinder inside the box to the right of the radio. Mount the GPS where the fishfinder was. Then, tell me to take a hike!

pogy,
Would never tell you to take a hike........thanks for your input. I may go with your option. My only delima is where to put a compass, any suggetions. Where the fish finder currently is, is where the compass is suppose to go, but I'm not excited about putting the GPS in the box, I think it would hurt reception, and don't want to add an antenna for the GPS.

thanks
