If so, any comments? Their high-resolution grayscale unit with external antenna and fuel management computer & transducer for < $400 makes it look pretty attractive .

Any comments?

I have the Navman 5500 color unit .Looks to be very well constructed ,easy to view in daylight and most importantantly simple to use.I also purchased the optional twin engine fuel flow meter ,C-Map super wide chart card. For a little over a 1000$ for everything, I have found this unit to be a great bargain.....To find the same features (I will probably get destroyed here as this seems to be a Garmin website)would cost around 1000$ just for the unit .You would not be dissapointed.P.S.I also have a garmin 45.great unit.

I currently own the NAVMAN 4200 fishfinder...and it is built like a freakin tank. I too am looking to upgrade my GPS to the 5100i. I found it on the internet for $308...I already have the fuel sensor installed and working on my 4200...if the 5100i is built anything like the 4200 (which is looks just like each other), I would expect no less in quality. Any pointers, good or bad, would be great...

Thanks in advance,
TimK

Bummer, what if 1 engine is burning 20 gph & the other 15 gph due to an unknown problem? (Ding in a prop, carb problem, bad wires..etc?) This would now show up. Also, if you're monitoring the 15 gph, it could be a long swim home. Just something to think about.

lobstal,

..see merit in ur comments.. in ur example though, i wud expect the fuel computer to read consumption at 17.5 gal and report remaing fuel and range based on that consumption.. therefor still look'n for a reason why the single engine monitor wouldn't do the job when my twins are pulling fuel from the same tank..?? ..comments anyone??

Bummer, now you've got me confused. Even though you have both engines being fed from the same tank, ther are being fed with TWO separate fuel lines. If you are reading only one engine, it will read 15, 17.5 20 or whatever that ONE engine is burning as the fuel transducer is spliced into only that engine's fuel line. The fuel transducer is not in the tank itself, only in the individual fuel line. If I'm wrong, please correct me as I also have two engines pulling off one tank. I plan on installing the standalone dual engine setup when Navman comes out with it.

Al, ur correct 4sure that 2 xducers wud be better then 1.. for me it was kinda academic question look'n for a pratical answer as in selecting which electronics to buy for new boat which is not here yet.. i've fiddeled with the Navman gps and liked it as well as this add'l fuel feature.. i did talk to company re this notion of mine; they ~~~'t recmd it although they said try if i must.. it wud need to be installed b4 the fuel line splits into 2 with an inline filer ahead of xducer.. gonna wait until i get the boat then decide..
