Default Garmin 220 hard to read screen

I bought a new Garmin 220, which I know is discontinued, but the price I thought was right. I am now disgusted with the unit as you cannot read it in the sunlite at all. I called Garmin and they suggested I put pantyhose over the screen to read it. I find that very hard to believe that and do not think pantyhose on my Gps would look very good. Oh well I guess I will look at a new unit and chock it up to experience. Anybody had one of these units and experienced this problem.
Thanks

sunlight viewablity is one of the reasons Im upgrading the machine I have. Unfortunately, all the units look bright in the store. I guess you need to bring a hand-held spotlight and blast the machine in the store to see if it's bright enough.

I called Garmin back because this is upsetting to me and the lady told there was something made by a aftermarket company that was similiar to a glare shield used on computers. She did not have a manufacture though, has anybody heard about a glare shield for Garmin products.

Are you sure there isn't a contrast adjustment you can make? I am not familiar with your model but I accidentally hit the keystroke combination on an old GPS 3 that changed the contrast to a point that I thought the screen had gone bad.

According to Garmin or the owners manuel there is only brightness, I cannot find anything about the contrast, that seems to be the problem.
Thanks
