Default Stereo system complete

Ok, I finally got the stereo system the way I want it. It has sounded very good for a while but I wanted to get the sub woofer box out of the console and put 10" JLs in the holes in the gunwales where the piece of shit Clarions used to be.

I posted a while ago about weather or not the JL subs would sound good with the rod holes right there, the Clarions didn't.

Well I got the JLs and put them in and it rocks, just as good as the sub in the console if not better. No distortion with those holes there, infact I think the holes allow the bass to flow.

This is the subwoofer I had in the console. The box was "custom made" by me and it sounded great with the single 10" automotive Kicker sub. Now I have my storage space back in my console.

This is the amp mounted in the cabin, its an automotive Rockford Fosgate P4004. I have had it for about 5 years and it never skips a beat. It started developing a little surface rust on the chrome cover plates so I sanded them down and painted them white. The white looks more "marine" anyway.

I bought all my JL Audio speakers on ebay. The first pair I got were 6.5" with the tweeter built in. Then I got a pair of 7.7s but minus the tweeter for a good deal. I just used the Clarion tweeter for a while, you can see it in the first pic. I recently ordered just the tweeters from Crutchfield.

To replace the 6.5 JL. I got a complete pair of 7.7 components. Then just in the last two weeks I was able to get the 10" subs to complete the system. It sounds amazing.

Every JL Audio speaker I got off ebay came brand new in the box, never used. Here is what I paid minus the 6.5 JL because I'm not using them. I may sell them.

7.7 minus tweeters.........$99.00 retail $289.00 (w/tweeters)
7.7 components............$169.99 retail $289.00
JL tweeters...................$105.00 retail $105.00
10" sub...........................$67.00 retail $269.00
10" sub...........................$85.00 retail $269.00

When I want to do a project I usually just run out and buy what I need but to buy all those JL speakers new would have been $1100.00 or more, I would have heard it from the wife on that one. So my savings by getting them on ebay was $575.00. She still thinks I'm crazy.

I know buying on ebay can be risky and there is no warranty but for that savings I took a chance and it payed off. Plus it took about 3-4 months of checking ebay to find the deals.

Anyway....I thought I would share.

I know, but after the last go round I covered mine and it sounds better - but only at loud volume - see what you find...

Yeah....I didn't really crank it to full volume for any period of time out of respect for the neighbors. I'll see what it does with different tones when I'm out on the water this weekend. I have no problem covering the holes up.

Last weekend I was on the speaker part of my project....right after I finished installing the first pair...and when I was getting ready to install the second pair, she asked the question "What??? 2 more!!! what do you want 4 speakers for??? 2 sound fine!!!",

She doesn't know that I still have to install the third pair Wish me luck when she finds out....

Nice install work, I don't know if i would want to lose rod storage for some speaker performance though....

How did that box sound in the console? Ive been looking at some of the tubes as a winter project and was wondering if it was worth it under the console. I have a TON of storage space so that's no issue.

That custom box is GETTO-FABULOUS!!!

LOL

My first concern was the subs being to close to the holes, it ended up being a non issue. It booms hard.

The box in the console sounded great, tight smooth bass like what you might hear in a car with a killer system. But the JLs sound just as good if not better.

Had a chance to really crank it up and it sounds great. Bass is very clean and smooth, no distortion what so ever. Only problem is that at high volume the bass rattles the hell out of the doors on those storage compartments.

You are going to have to dampen those doors (just like your car stereo). Don't know how much the rattling bothers you but add weight (aka dynomat) or another sound deadening product would work. I would also try adjusting the door locks for a snug close to see if it helps.

Looks good.

I'm not sure what "phase" means in this situation.

Great post thank you. I am starting a stereo upgrade and this was helpful.

Where did you mount the amplifier?

Are you running all these speakers off of only one amp?

Chris - while it looks like a good buy (and if it is new JL it is),

7.7 minus tweeters.........$99.00 retail $289.00 (w/tweeters)
7.7 components............$169.99 retail $289.00
JL tweeters...................$105.00 retail $105.00
10" sub...........................$67.00 retail $269.00
10" sub...........................$85.00 retail $269.00

A lot of that JL stuff on ebay is counterfeit. Unless the stuff was hot, it seems to cheap to be the genuine deal.
