Have a WC 270SC coming in the spring. Have been looking at Furuno NavNet 1943C with Open Array (4'). This unit is 6KW. Anyone with experience know if this is enough juice for marking birds?

Reports out of FLorida from guys I talked to at the Lauderdale show (Halloween) indicate that 6KW is the absolute minimum for birds. Better performance can be had with 12KW, especially the 1953C NavNet, which is one antenna size bigger than the 1943C but uses the same kind of display. 25KW used to be the only way to go, but to get that you need to go to a much higher price tag for "just radar" as compared to the NavNet networked equipment. Good luck.

There are a lot of guys using the 6kw to mark birds. I'm sure the 12kw will do even a better job, but you'll be okay with the 6kw.

Go to the Floria Sportsman forum and do some searches on this topic. The "other-side" guys use that radar unit a lot down here.

Had a new 6K Furuno & used this for tuna fishing for 2 years in 2001 & 2002. In 2003 acquired a different boat and purchased a 6K JRC after a fair amount of research. The JRC is easier to tune and use and gets better results in my opinion. As you propably know these units don't come tuned for birds. The Furuno was tuned specifically for birds by a pro and worked ok. JRC e-mailed me a tuning bulletin for their unit and I was able to make the software adjustments in about a half hour.

Fish Tank,

Can you post the tuning instructions you got from JRC? I would like them for future reference.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

As I mentioned earlier, having used both the Furuno and the JRC 6K units we strongly prefer the JRC. They will e-mail you the latest bird radar tuning instructions if you request that from Patrick. His address is patrickc@jrcamerica.com.
