Default Interference from Fluorescent Lights??

Looking to get a t-top built and requested one of the built in fluorescent lights that is made into the aluminum cross bar. The pipe welder mentioned that someone told him that they will mess up your GPS signal.

He said that he had only heard this from one customer, but thought it maybe a concern.

Has anyone ever heard or experienced this?

Don't know about GPS, but most of the cheaper flourescents WILL screw up Loran. You could go to
IMTRA.com & post your question to them. They have quality products.

Why would you want a flouresent anyway? They suck anyway you look at it. Install LED lights or rope lights.

Well, let's see! I have a handhelp GPS and a flouro work light. I'll plug it in and put it next to my GPS and see if there are any ill effects.

My 21 contender came standard with a fluorescent light right over leaning post. I think the contenders still do. I have not had any problems with gps or fishfinder at all.

I had a flourescent light from Birdsall Marine on my Mako with a Garmin gps right under it and never had a problem.
Birdy, flourescent lights give out alot of light for minimal amp usage, also, pretty inexpensive. Led's are nice, I just put some behind my switch panel, but can't beat the flourescent tube for light/value/amp use.

I dont know if it can interfere or not, but Fluorescent lights do require high voltages and give off large amounts of EMI so seems possible

The ionizing gas will emit rf energy, typically higher levels of energy at lower frequencies. THat's why loran is many times affected. In addition, electronic ballasts used will emit also, and could affect VHF, possible GPS. THere are some reports of IR remote controls being affected also. My particular 12" tube doesn't seem to affect my gps or vhf.
