Default Difference between Furuno 600L and 582

Need a new finder and have couple of questions. First, is the main difference between these two the depth ratings and power?

Second mainly fish the Chesapeake Bay and close offshore. Seems like the 600L is a real good unit and 582 would be overkill for me. Looking at Lowrance X 98 also, but would go the extra few hundred for the color Furuno if worth it.

Third my current Raytheon 365 50/200khz has 350W. I have been told that lack of power is one of my problems, but 600L only has 350W. Should I wait and get a more powerful unit?

Also how would this unit be w/ transom mount ducer. Prefer this so easy to move to new boat, will leave old Ray. Thanks

What are the differences? 250 watts and about an inch of screen size are the major ones, knobs instead of buttons comes in second place.

350 watts will hit the bottom every single time in water up to something near 750 feet, and shoot a lot deeper if you got the transducer mounting just right and the boat is reasonably stable. That maximum depth is something the manufacturer's keep in mind when they establish the range scales the machines are capbable of. Its something like truck speedometers, no reason to put a speedometer into a truck that reads up to 300 mph when the truck will only go 95. Of course the marketing guys get their shot at it too so the maximum range the machine can show will always exceed the maximum depth the machine can actually read bottom at. That's life.

Do you need a 582 in the bay? I don't know. How is your eyesight? You certainly don't need a 582 because of the depth but given a choice between a 6" screen and a 7" screen the larger one will be easier to read every time - all other things being held constant as us economists like to say. If I were going to be spending all of my time in the bay, or nearby waters of reasonable depth (not to exceed about 100 fathoms) I'd opt for the 600L myself, but that would be a money saving decision. If I was a wealthy as someone like Birdman ( ) I'd go for the 582, or maybe the new and magical one that Raytheon is now advertising .....

For about 125.00 more than the 600L you can buy the JRC 50ff, which is JRC's competitor to the 582.

Have had them on the same boat side by side on dash. Both excellent, if anything the 600L seemed a little more bright, maybe due to smaller screen. TVs do that, the bigger the screen, less vibrant the colors. Anyways, if you are staying under 250 ft of depth, get the 600L, it's really first class. And as our sage said, if you got lots of $$$s to throw away...582L. Can't go wrong either way. D2
