Default marine alternator any diffrent than auto?

Upgrading to a new alternator and i can't find a diffrence between auto and marine other than a spark arrester at the rear of the marine style. Is there more to it, price diffrence is the only thing I see but as the saying goes add marine in front of anything and add 20%. It's for a merc 460-170 hp.

As far as I know, that is the only difference. BUT, don't even consider putting the automotive version in. It's against CG regs. Also, you have a 25 year old boat. Is your fuel tank new? Are ALL your fuel lines new? Are you sure that nobody will never try to fill your tank through the fishing rod holder? Are you never going to flood your carb? &%$# happens & then there could be a big boom.

The screening to make them spark proof is the ONLY difference! You can take an automotive alternator to an alternator shop and have them add the screen and you are good to go.

Other than the flame arrestor housing / screen, and the rating, they're automotive alternators at heart. Marine alternators are available in a larger variety, with lots of current delivery. Don't go overboard and get a 200 amp alternator for your 4-cyl gas engine though

My Mercruiser 888 came with a 42 amp alternator. I bumped it up a size and put in a 63 amp alternator. I expect to increase the frequency of belt changes if I really need to pull amps, but I usually don't discharge the batteries that deeply.
