Default Refurbished electronics

What’s everyone’s thoughts on refurbished electronics? Is it worth the risk? I have been looking some chart plotters and was wondering what gets refurbished in electronics.

I bought factory refurbed Garmin - saved several hundred dollars on new and got the same 1 year warranty.

I ran a refurbished Garmin 3010c on my last boat. I couldnt tell it was used. I am running a refurbished 3010c on my new boat too. At least from Garmin, they come with new unit warranties and lood brand new when you get them. I would trust them more than a new unit as you know they been been gone over well and tested before being put back on the market.

BTW, I am also running a reman Garmin NUVI in my car. No problems either. Save the money and get the reman!

It depends on the company as to how good the refurbs are. With some companies, I would say that the refurbs are better/more dependable than the new product off the line. They are often very careful to be sure it's right when they refurb. But I've heard of plenty of companies that just did a quick once-over and pushed them back out the door. It sounds like Garmin is one of the former type companies. I'd rather have new with them. But if the price gap is enough, I wouldn't hesitate to buy their refurbs.

FWIW many of Garmin NOH or Refurbished are brand new repacked, and this is just a way to drop the price when they got to much of stock, without price protecting there dealers for what they still got on the shelf.

I would buy reman over new any chance I could. I have no problem with them. As a retailer that sells them I would say the amount of defective returns from reman units is a smaller percentage than new units.

The only one I had come back from a customer was a Garmin C330 reman. The back light went out and Garmin swapped it out. There is nothing wrong with reman at all if there is a warranty.

Bought a just-refurbished Garmin Nuvi 660 for road use and found obvious operating issues from the git-go that were not too serious and the well-charged-up battery went dead right away & stayed that way. I expect Garmin would have fixed these issues if I had sent it back but since they hadn't the 1st time , perhaps not. Works well enough as long as it's plugged in. Point is just because it's reman don't expect everything was really fully checked and made good if bad.

I'd sat on the fence for years before a plotter appeared that met my needs at a price that I could afford. It was a refurbed Standard Horizon CP1000C from BOE. I was nervous about buying a refurb but I'm real happy that I did. It was new in appearance and performance and came with a full 3 year warranty and excellent factory support. As I recall it was $990.00- about half the cost of new at that time. No regrets about BOE, Standard Horizon, or going refurb.

I know there are a couple other 10" Garmin remans available but none in the 4000 or 5000 series yet.

Pretty much what everyone else has said. They have to test and make sure it works before it leaves and has to look in new cond. so there is no real downside from what I can see.

One downside: They have to be mann-ed before they can be re-manned! You have to stand in line a long time to snatch one of the few that get remanned in the first year or two of production.

We got our Raymarine E120 (refurbished, saved $800) on eBay back in April 2006. Came with 2 year warranty from Sailtech.com. No troubles at all.
