Default Garmin Streetpilot experience

I have owned a Garmin Streetpilot 330 for over 2 years now. I am very pleased with it and cannot imagine driving without it. Two weeks ago the unit failed to power up. I tried different plugs, checked for a stuck switch, nothing

I went to the Garmin website to see what my options were. Since I am out of (1 year) warranty, my only option was to send the unit back and pay $160 to have it re-furbished and receive it back with the map update and a 1 year warranty.

The map update alone is $80 and the unit conviently lets you know this once it is a year old. Upon doing some googling and ebaying I discovered I could buy a factory re-furbished 530 model complete with a 1 year Garmin warranty and the updated street map for $104! Shipping included! I checked the company and found they are an authorized re-seller so the warranty is good.

The "new" unit arrrived today complete with all of the paperwork, accessories, and a travel bag along with a Garmin box. The unit powered up and works great. It is considerably faster than the 330 model and has a couple of new features.

This is just a heads up for those that may find themselves in my postion. Oh, and by the way, as for the status of the "old" 330 unit, I plugged it in over the weekend and of course it powered up and is now working fine. My wife will get that one.

I bought a bunch of the 330's for our staff and they are one of the best investments ever. One was brought back into the office as DOA and sat for a few days. I put it in my car and it worked perfectly other than having a dead battery which quickly recharged. I assumed that it just wasn't making good connection in the cig lighter and the batt discharged. It's back in another vehicle and doing great

The 530 has the traffic alert feature. I called Garmin a couple of weeks ago and was told they are rolling out a $99 lifetime traffic subscription and to check back in a month

What is involved in downloading the map updates for these units ?

Visit the Garmin site and follow the instructions. You will need the serial number off the unit to access the download area of the site. I believe you can buy one download for your PC or MAC and go from there.

You can go to my.garmin.com to register your products. It will tell you the current subscription and map status, plus any updates available. To update a map just follow the instructions on screes, and the data will be downloaded to your computer. Then you connect the GPS to the computer, run the update and it is loaded on the GPS.
