Default Marine Electronics at Best Buy

The other day I was taking my wife to the book store when I walked past the Best Buy store and saw a sign in the window: "Own a boat? Best Buy now carries marine electronics".

I told my wife to go on to the book store and then meet me in Best Buy.

I walked in and looked around but could not find the "marine electronics" section. Eventually, a salesman asked if I was finding what I needed. I told him I was looking for the marine electronics section. He looked at me a little funny and said "It's probably in the "car-fi" department". (Yes, he said "car-fi"). He pointed to the back corner of the store so I walked over, expecing to find chart plotters, depth sounders, VHF radios, etc. What does Best Buy call "marine electronics"? Stereos, amps, and speakers. That's all.

While it's nice to browse at BB I've never been a fan of their lack of service or their high prices.

Ever try to return something at Best Buy? ARGHHHH!

I like Circuit City, never a return hassle.

I tried to return my CC stock for what I paid for it. Didn't work.

Actually I sold it couple years ago and very thankful I did. Now it takes 3 shares to by a Coke.

they are a big Garmin dealer

http://www.bestbuy.com/olspage.jsp?t...at156300050006

I think most of the marine stuff is online only
Interesting that they show a picture of the Garmin 3000 or 4000 series on the marine electronics page but they only sell the smaller ones and nothing close the 3xxx or 4xxx's.. I'm sure they will be adding more but as it was mentioned, their prices are not very competitive.

I second BOE for purchases!

I just assumed with the sign "Marine Electronics", I would be able to look and "play" with actual chart plotters and such. I really don't consider a stereo to be "marine electronics" even it it's been designed for use on a boat.

As for their website, they don't carry much. And if I were to buy from them on-line I would be charged shipping and SC sales tax. With most on-line vendors I would only pay shipping.

I had a GE refrigerator we bought from best buy that was having a problem with the compressor starting, would just hum at times. Best buy service came out 4 times before they decided to replace compressor.

The tech arrived 3 hours late the day of the appointment, and took him almost 3 hours to replace compressor, after he was done the fridge turned into a heater and made all kinds of noise.(He installed high and low sides backwards). They sent another tech the next day and said it was unrepairable on their performance plan and go to the store for a replacement.

I go to the store to get a replacement and I can't get the same fridge because price has gone up and I bought it on sale 3 years earlier and they will only let you get a replacement for what you paid three years ago on sale, not the current price.

So now the the tech ruined my fridge and I have to pay money to get the same fridge.

Will never buy a appliance from best buy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can understand your feelings. Is there a state or local agency you can go to for resolution? How about a local TV station?

Tried most of those avenues both no one was able to help, because that exact sennerio is spelled out in legal lingo on the protection plan contract.

The name for for best buys extended warranty is "Protection Plan" the only one it protects is Best Buy!!!!!

This week I had car stereo installed at Best Buy and all went great, especially the price.I tried local private shops and felt they were trying to over sell me. BB was less than half and it was installed in 1 hour. Not your typical story about chains but this went great.(Garner,NC)

Not to change the subject, but this is why I advise people not to buy "extended warranties" on their boats or anything else for that matter. As you found out, the odds are in favor of the seller, not the buyer.

I seem to be in the minority...I'd rather go to Best Buy then set foot in a Circuit City. The BB stores here have all been renovated, and their help has been "renovated" as well. Folks seem to be knowledgable, and the couple times I have had to return something its never been a problem. Just keep the receipt...

The Best Buy in Ft. Myers at Page Field Commons had a 5000 on sale in the store on a rack at the front of the store, along with several nice Garmin marine products. They have sold out by now but it was in store.

At either place, your "knowledgable" sales consultant was likely to have been flipping burgers just a few days ago.

My gripe... Best Buy often isn't -especially for cables. For example (last I looked) a $10 HDMI cable online is about $80 at BB. Same for ethernet cables, etc.

back when i worked at Circuit City, it always amazed me how many people would pay for the overpriced cables that we sold. i almost felt bad selling a 50 dollar a/v cable with a 75 dollar dvd player.
