Default VHF Radios With DSC

In order for DSC to work it must be connected to a GPS. Do all fixed mount GPS Units and GPS/Sounder Combos have the capability of being connected to a VHF radio with DSC? I am looking at the Garmin 188C and Furuno 1650WF.

No. All GPS units can NOT ouput position data to DSC VHF radios. But, most can, and the 2 units you refer to, CAN.

What you need to look for is make sure the GPS unit has an NMEA output. If it has an NMEA output, then it CAN send position data to any DSC VHF radio. NMEA consists of 2 wires, a plus and a minus, very easy to connect up.

Good luck.

Agree with Birdman. Both of your manuals should contain instructions for making the connections.

i know the 1650 can definitely interface with an icom 502 if that helps...i don't see any reason why either of the 2 units you listed shouldn't be able to...

NMEA Version

There are several versions of NMEA. A new DSC VHF may require (i.e. be compatible with) NMEA 1.5 or 2.0, but not older. Just check that your GPS is providing an NMEA version that meets the requirement for the DSC VHF.
