Default Some Stereo System Questions...

I'm looking at installing an audio system on my boat and am thinking about going with the Clarion CMD5 head unit, JL Audio 4 Channel AMP and JL Audio Speakers.

1) What is the difference between the JL Audio M770 CCS vs. CCX? Both speakers seem to be for infinite baffle applications (am installing in the gunnels of my boat) but don't know which is appropriate.
2) With the Clarion CMD5, is there a difference in the B model vs. the others? I want to add XM so will have to buy a satellite unit for it.
3) What is the IPOD adapter for the CMD5? Does it plug into the front? Is it a complicated install?

Would love some feedback for any and all of the above. Frankly, I've gone through the owners manual for the speakers online and am puzzled.

I'm installing the system on my 1983 Grady White Kingfisher 254 (a walkaround cuddy cabin boat)

The JL Audio M770-CCX-CG-WH are 7.7" 2 way marine speakers. These have the tweeter attached to the main speaker all in one nice single package.
The JL Audio M770-CCS-SG-WH are 7.7" 2 way marine component speakers. These have separate tweeters and you will need to cut another little hole beside the main speaker to mount it.
Other than that, they are the same thing. Sound and performance is the same.

thanks, that is very helpful. What is the advantage of having the tweeter separate from the main speaker?

Also, anyone have experience with a Sony 604M amp? Thinking of economizing and saving a hundred or two on the JL Amp and going with Sony. Any other good marine amps that people can recommend?

Thanks. For the advice on the speakers. I need to measure to see if I have room for the separate tweeter hole.

If I want to add XM to the Clarion CMD5 head unit, do I have to add an XM box? Has anyone done this? Does it come with an antenna or do I have to buy that as well. I run a Garmin 4210 and realize I have to get a GDL30A if i want to do XM Weather subscription but not sure which box to get XM Radio.

you don't need the XM box for the cmd5 if you get the garmin XM addition....however it will go in and use the aux in inputs and therefore an ipod will have to go in thru the interface.....

ok got it, so since I own a Garmin 4210 (which is XM compatible) all i have to do is get an XM tunes box for the CMD5 and then a GDL30A if i want the weather option. Think I've got it (until I try the install).

Thanks for the help.

you kinda got it... last time I looked, the weather box for the garmin woiuld also send tunes to your cmd5...they sell it two ways - just weather and weather and tunes....

there is one advantage to the way you have said it above - you won't tie up your gps every time you want to change a station (the way I have mine).

Dowplunger - The CCAIPOD interface plugs into the Clarion CMD5 with no complications. It is a single cable that plugs into the back side of the source unit, the iPod 30-pin connector cable needs to be routed to a location where you want to store your iPod. (out of the elements preferably) Be sure to follow the instructions on the cables when connecting and you will have no problems.

XM satellite receiver and translator box are required for XM to work with the Clarion unit. (Terk makes them but they are difficult to locate) Check EBAY.
