Use a good vom and measure the voltage at the closest point to the radio's power leads while the mic is keyed if it holds
a good steady voltage then you most likely have an internal problem with the radio. If the voltage drops off then you
have a wiring issue. If the radio is the culprit the final rf stage is failing you should get a new one. If the radio is replaced
make sure the antenna is tested with a meter on low power first and then the high power setting. Reason being that the
antenna and or coax could have failed and the reverse power damaged the radio finals.

Stephen, lets hope it is a wiring issue that can be easily fixed.

Could be the problem area, I would make sure all contacts and connections were cleaned up properly before moving forward.
An antenna test using a Bird or Telewave watt meter could help you alot.

Sounds like an antenna system problem. Clean up the corrosion first as that can act like a diode. Than have the SWR measured. If it is still high - suspect the antenna. The problem you report is usually associated with an bad antenna. The radio seeing an impedance mismatch (high SWR reading) will start to reduce current to the final amplifier in your radio, which diminishes your transmitted signal. Some radio in very high SWR environs will actualy shut them selves off.
